Chapter 8: This passage suggests three things we have got to get right to get right with the Lord

A. Passion for God’s Word

1. The people initiated the Reading of the Word (1)

2. Ezra read from the text for 6 hours!

3. The people were attentive to the Word (3)

4. Lit. “The ears of the people were TO the Book of the Law.”

5. NOTE: A platform was built – careful preparation was made for this event.

6. The people showed honor to the Word (5)

7. We see that again in 9:3 – standing out of respect for God’s Word

B. Reverence for the Lord

1. The people responded their affirmation of the word — “Amen” (6)

2. The people bowed in worship (6)

C. Obedience to the Word

1. The people Learned the Word (8-9)

2. Exp. Around Ezra were 13 men (probably priests or Levites — teachers)

3. The people responded to the Word (9)

4. The people were Obedient to the Word (10-12)

5. The people did as they were instructed (10)

6. Celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles restored (14-18)

7. 8:18 – A Solemn Assembly was held “according to the prescribed manner.” In fulfillment of Lev. 23:39

D. Application:

1. The people heard the Word, learned the Word, were moved by the Word, and obeyed the Word
