Study on The Holy Spirit

I.       Who is the Holy Spirit?

A.    In the Old Testaments the Holy Spirit had Selective Indwelling

B.    In the New Testament we find the Comforter

1.     John 14:16-17,16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

a)     Here Jesus tells us He is going to send another Comforter. Who was the first one?

2.     Only those who accepted Christ get the Holy Spirit

3.     How long does the Spirit dwell in us?

a)     Ephesians 1:13, In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise

b)     Ephesians 4:30, And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption

c)     John 14:16, And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever

4.     The seal is a mark of ownership (Eph 1:13)

a)     It is a sign that one belongs to God

5.     The seal is also a mark of Security

C.    In the New Testament He is call the Comforter

1.     John 14:16, And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever

2.     The word is also translated “Helper”

3.     Which comes from two words

a)     “Along side” and “called”

b)     “One called along side to help”

II.     What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit?

A.    The Holy Spirit is influences us

1.     We want to obey more of God's Word and His leading of the Spirit

2.     Even when we speak of earthly things like work or our house, we do it in praise of God.

a)     We go wrong when we separate God from our daily lives

B.    We have the fruits of the Spirit

1.     The fruits of the Spirit start with love

2.     Without love we do not have the Spirit

C.    To be filled with the Spirit we must put away that grieves the Spirit

1.     1 Peter 2:1-2,1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, 2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby

2.     Prayer is an important key

a)     Prayer that is not just reptition, put with desire from the heart

3.     We must want God's leading in our lives to have the power of the Holy Spirit lead us

4.     Look at the artist’s chisel; the artist cannot carve without it. Yet imagine the chisel, conscious that it was made to carve, and that it is its function, trying to carve alone. It lays itself against the hard marble, but it has neither strength nor skill. Then we can imagine the chisel full of disappointment. “Why cannot I carve?” it cries. Then the artist comes and seizes it. The chisel lays itself into his hand, and is obedient to him. Thought, feeling, imagination, skill, flow down from the deep chambers of the artist’s soul to the chisel’s edge. The sculptor and the chisel are not two, but one; it is the unit which they make that carves the stone. We are but the chisel to carve God’s statues in this world.

5.     We must yield ourselves altogether to Christ, and let Him use us. Then His power, His wisdom, His skill, His thought, His love, shall flow through our soul, our brain, our heart, our fingers. (Bp. Phillips Brooks.)

B.

John 16:7-11,7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Acts 2:4,4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
