Christ had to learn
Christ had to learn
Hebrews 5:7-9,
7 who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with strong cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, 8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. 9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,
I. Christ had to pray just like us.
A. All through Christ life we find Him praying. He was a prayer warrior.
1. In Luke 22:39-46 He prays in the Garden of Gethsemane.
a) The prayer mentioned here in verse 7 is talking about the prayer that Christ prayed in the Garden.
(1) Christ prays three time for about an hour each time.
2. In John 17:1-5 Christ is praying for Himself.
3. In Luke 6:12-16 Christ preys all night before selecting the disciples.
B. There are many more examples in the Bible of Christ praying and praying for long periods of time.
C. Christ felt the need to spend time with God.
1. And He was God.
2. He is our example.
II. In verse 8 it says, Christ had to learn obedience.
A. Christ did not know what it was like to be man.
1. He had to learn what it was like to be tempted and have victory.
2. Hebrews 4:15,15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
B. Christ was tempted more than we ever could be tempted.
1. When we get into a swimming pool, the pressure at the bottom can be great.
a) We can only take some much of it. It hurts our hears.
b) Christ on the other hand, feels the same pressure and keeps on taking it without giving up.
2. Think of being tortured to the point one gives in.
a) Christ was tortured and never gave in.
b) Like being tempted every moment of each day for the same thing.
C. In doing so, Christ now knows what it is like when we are tempted and can feel for us.
1. When we go to Christ in prayer, we now know He understand what we are going through and helps us accordantly.
2. Can you imagine going to someone here to talk about your problems knowing they have not been through it them self’s.
a) How can they relate to me?
b) They don’t know what it is like!
c) Christ does?
III. And because of all this, Christ becames the author of our Salvation.
A. Christ was made perfect.
1. He was already perfect, because He was God in the flesh.
2. The things which He learned by being in the flesh, which helps us, Christ became the perfect sacrifice for us.
B. The word “perfect” here means “bringing of a person or thing to the goal fixed by God.”
1. Christ was coming to the end of His ministry.
a) He had finished the race set before Him.
b) He had done his Father’s will.
2. Christ had done all the His Heavenly Father had asked of Him.
a) The word “Author” here in verse 9 means “that in which the cause of anything resides.” Messiah in His death on the Cross is the cause of our salvation. His death is that from which our salvation proceeds.[1]
b) The things that Christ learned made Him the perfect sacrifice to God for us.
Conclusion: It is so comforting to know that Christ felt everything we could or will feel in our life here on earth and is ready to help us when we need it. To comfort us when we need it. To be there for us. All we have to do is learn the art of prayer.
