What does it take to be a father?

You have to be a man (male)
You have to have offspring (to reproduce)

Define -FATHER-

ancestor; progenitor; chief
To be the source or originator of something
The oldest member of a society or other body
A man who introduces or founds something (Father of our country) (Founding fathers) (Church fathers) (Father of modern medicine)
A man who provides care and protection
Romans 4:17 NASB95
17 (as it is written, “A father of many nations have I made you”) in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist.
Ephesians 4:3–6 NASB95

To shape and mold his family into the image of Christ
