Isaiah 9:6, For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Each one of these names have a meaning for us in our lives as Christians and I want for us to take a look at them this morning.
I. The first one tells us He is called Wonderful
A. Christ was wonderful in his teaching here on earth
1. Matthew 7:28-29, 28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: 29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
2. The people of that day were use to the scribes teaching them, but this one call Christ knew what He was talking about. They were Astonished
a) Christ was wonderful to listen to
B. Christ was wonderful in His doings as well
1. Isaiah 25:1, O LORD, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.
2. Christ taught, He healed, He had mericy on the people
3. Also Christ’s birth was wonderful and His death was like no other
4. Christ was wonderfull in all that He did
a) He love like no other has ever done before
b) Christ always though of others
c) He had mercies like no other
C. Christ truly was Wonderfull
II. The next name, He is called Counselor
A. As a Counselor Christ was the perfect teacher
B. As Counselor He is our advocate
1. He goes before God for us
2. Hebrews 2:18, For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to (suk-er) succour them that are tempted.
a) Succour means = to run up to help or to relieve
b) Hebrews 4:15, For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
(1) He was the perfect Counsellor
(2) Chris know what we go through each day and because of that He can help us.
(3) When we go to a Councellor, what do we go for, but to get help and who can help us more than someone who has been through the same problem
3. 1 John 2:1, My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous
a) It is just like a court room up in heaven with Satan accuring us and Christ our advocate defending us
4. Remember back in Matthew 7:29, For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
C. Christ is truly our Councellor
III. The third name given to Him is Mighty God
A. He is the one, and all power is given to Him
1. Matthew 28:18, And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
2. John 14:7, If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
3. John 10:30, I and my Father are one.
4. Colossians 1:16, For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him
Christ is the Mighty God
B. As God, Christ has the power to execute His wise plan
1. As almighty God He can and will be the champion at everything He does.
2. We can rest in the comfort that Christ has the power to execute anything He sets out to do
C. Just think, when the wise men came and went before the Christ child, they were standing the God of the Universe.
D. In the book of Isaiah the term “Mighty God” means Hero
IV. The fourth name here is Everlasting Father
A. In the Hebrew writings we find statements to describe people,
1. A strong man was called “the father of strength”
2. A wise man was called “the father of wisdom”
B. Here in our verse Christ is called Everlasting Father.
1. Which means “Father of Eternity”
2. Christ will be the Father of Eternity life for us.
C. Because of Christ we will have eternal life.
1. He truly is the Everlasting Father
V. Last but not least He is called Prince of Peace
A. As we see in history Princes and Kings have always ruled in a way that the people were under bondage
1. They had to pay taxes of some type
2. Some were even slaves to the King
3. Even today we give some 33% of our earning to support our government
B. Christ will be the Prince of Peace
1. As we study the Bible we see a peaceful time a time when the Lion and the sheep will be friends
2. Isaiah 2:4, He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.
3. Luke 2:14, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Christ will be the Prince of Peace
Well we have seen 5 names which describe Christ and who He was, what will you do with it?
“He came to pay a debt He didn’t owe, because we owed a debt we couldn’t pay”
