Colossian Bible Study

Colossian church is about 100 miles east of the Ephesus in Asia Minor.

Paul lived in Ephesus for 2 years teaching every day.

The Colossian church had some problems in it. Some of the people

were worshipping angles and trying to gain power by doing that.

Some were keeping with Old Testament Jewish law with what they could eat. 

I.       Verse 1,

A.    By the will of God

1.     The Apostle Paul was in the will of God

a)     He was a apostle

2.     He was doing what God wanted him to do

3.     With him is Timothy

a)     Who was a leader in the church of Ephesus

B.    We in turn need to look at ourselves and make sure we are in the will of God

1.     Many good people are doing things for God and are not in His will

2.     Not everyone can teach. Some are have the gift of mercy and others the gift to help others. Some can disciple others

II.     Verse 2,

A.    The Saints and believers are one of the same

1.     The word Saint means = To be set apart for God

2.     Notice here that it says to the Saints in Colossian

a)     They are alive and not dead

B.    Here it is telling us that true peace and grace come from God

III.    Verse 3,

A.    Paul hears good reports of them

1.     He has never visited them

B.    Paul keeps them in prayer

IV.   Verse 4 - 14

A.    Paul here talks about the reports he has heard about them

B.    And again Paul prays for them because of all the good things he hears

C.    Paul prays also for them in the area of knowledge

1.     Paul want them to have the important knowledge which is of God

2.     The word here means super knowledge

a)     To study hard all about the Bible.

b)     The word Wisdom occurs 6 times in this Epistle

3.     Christians should always be growing, getting closer to their Christ by getting to know their Savior

D.    In verse 11 God tells us that all power comes from Him by the workings of the Holy Spirit

1.     Strengthen our selves. How do we do this?

a)     This can only come from God

2.     These believers are to have “all patience and longsuffering “

3.     With Joyfulness

a)     So we are to be happy while we are patiently waiting on God

E.     Verse 12,

1.     Paul begins a list of thanksgiving

2.     Always when we pray, it should be with thanksgiving.

3.     What keeps me going is knowing that God is true and that I can count on Him.

a)     When I look back at all the prayers that have been answered for me

b)     By giving thanks for what God has done in the past, we keep in our minds afresh all that He has done, which will help us in the future

F.     In Verse 15-20, he talks about the person of Jesus Christ.

1.     Jesus shows us what God is like

a)     Jesus is the human image of God

2.     When God made man, He made man in His image and likeness

a)     When man sinned, he lost the likeness of God

b)     Now today we see that likeness again in Christ

3.     Christ comes to earth to make things right in God's eyes so we can have fellowship with God again and go to heaven

a)     Verse 19 in Christ is the fullness of everything we will ever need or want

(1)   We are saved because of Christ
(2)   We can have victory over sin and over all our problems every day because of Christ
(3)   We can have fellowship with God because of Christ

4.     All because of Christ dying on the cross

a)     We now become blameless before God

(1)   Verse 22

5.     God ends this section with his statement

a)     Verse 23 “If” could be “since”

b)     If or since you are a Christian you will continue in faith. How?

(1)   Grounded and settled
(a)   Are we grounded?
(b)   Are we settled in the faith and the Word
(2)   Let nothing lead you away from what you have learned

6.     All the above will be ours

V.    Verse 1:24-2:5

A.    It was costly for Paul to preach the Gospel

1.     He suffered beatings

2.     Imprisonments

3.     And insults

B.    Lets look in Act 9:15-16

1.     Paul is now writing from prison and telling us that he has fulfilled Act 9:15-16

2.     Paul suffered much for the church and he counted it a blessing to do it for Christ.

3.     Turn to John 15:18-19

C.    Act 9:14 This is when Paul got saved, lets take a look at it

1.     By persecuting the Christian, he was persecuting Christ.

D.    Verse 25

1.     Dispensation = means a period of time. Here it is to the Gentles at Colossian

2.     In the Old Testament they sacrificed animal, they were waiting for Christ to come

E.     Verse 26

1.     The mystery which was in the Old Testament

2.     The mystery was that the Jews will have to get saved just like the Gentle do and they is going to be one church.

F.     Verse 27 The church will bring in the new dispensation, the church age.

G.    Verse 28-29 We will be bring in the word to all men.
