Eph 5:25-33
I. . Husbands are to love their wives as Christ loves the church (5:25–33).
A. Christ died for the church (5:25).
B. Christ lives to make the church holy and clean (5:26).
1. Christ came to make a way for us to get to heaven.
2. Christ came to show us how to live and have a wonderful life here on earth.
3. Do you notice that it all about us that He came!
a) We who are saved are the Church.
C. The headship that the man has in marriage is to take care of his wife.
1. The wife should be man’s trophy.
a) A husband should be so proud of his wife that he wants to show her off just like one would do if they had a trophy.
2. We should take good care of our wives.
a) What do you do with your motorcycle?
(1) Clean it.
(2) Polish it
(3) Change the oil.
(4) Add chrome.
b) Do the same for your wife.
(1) Not just in deed, but in word as well. (Like at bike night, my old lady)
3. The husband’s role is to take care of his wife, substance her, be the spiritual leader, breadwinner, to encourage her in time of need.
4. The man is the leader of the family.
a) Leader lead, they go first into battle.
b) Luke 22:24-27,24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
c) John 13:1-20 Christ washes the disciples feet.
II. Verse 31 Husband and Wife become one flesh.
A. As I stated before in Gen. when a man and a woman get married they become one flesh.
1. When you do something to the other you are doing it to your own self. Look at verse 29
a) Let me give you an example; I was correcting my son one day when I realized that I do the same thing. It was like looking into a mirror.
2. When one is happy the other is happy or sad. Each one feels for the other.
3. Christ gave Himself for the church to be born again; Adam gave of himself for Eve to be born.
B. Marriage is not just having kids, renting or buying a house, or having sex. It is two people coming together as Christ and the Church is coming together.
1. A wife and husband relationship is closer than a parent and a child could ever be or should be.
C. In verse 31 it says “to join” or “cleave” which means = to glue two blocks of wood together and then they become one.
1. It is an unbreakable join.
2. Each of us breaks ties from our parents to form a new tie to our spouse.
a) This second tie is stronger than the first.
b) All children will leave their parents, but a husband and wife are stuck together till death.
III. Verse 33 Love your wife as you own self and the wife is to respect her husband.
A. Love your wife as your self.
1. We talk about some of this earlier.
a) It is the man’s job to keep the love light burning and not the woman’s.
b) How do you take care of your self?
(1) I get the things I want for myself.
(2) Do the same things unto your wife.
2. 1 Corinthians. 13:4-7.
a) Love is all about giving.
3. The root of all marriage problems comes form one thing. (Selfishness)
4. If the husband loves his wife the way God wants him to, his wife want have a problem being in subjection to him.
B. Wives are to respect their husbands.
1. Let us think about something here, Why was man made? Why was woman made?
2. What happened after the fall? What was the punishment?
3. What do you think, why God command a woman to respect her husband and not command a woman to lover her husband as He did to man?
4. A woman is to honor her husbands in everything.
a) How do you honor a King or a President or some high official?
5. Respect means = an act of giving particular attention : consideration, high or special regard : esteem, to consider worthy of high regard.
6. Reverence means = honor or respect felt or shown: especially: profound adoring awed respect. Also it means to honor.
