Father’s Day


Ephesians 6:2, Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

I.       Honor thy father

A.    Means “to put value on”

1.     Fathers are a valuable thing to have

2.     Fathers are something of value, something worth having.

a)     It literally means to determine an amount of money, or to set a price on

b)     My father is worth a million dollars

B.    The word honor also means to reverence”

1.     A feeling of profound awe

2.     To love them

C.    And finally “to show respect”

1.     Another way of saying this is to give recognition

2.     Respect means “to avoid having arguments or fights with you father even when they are wrong

3.     When someone goes before a King, they show respect for the office, which in this case is Fatherhood.

4.     That is what we are doing today

a)     You might take him out to eat or get a Fathers day card, or a present of some kind.

b)     We do this to show how much we love, honor, respect or reverence them

c)     We honor them on how we talk to them every day

II.     Now God promises us something when we honor our fathers

A.    God actually gives you something in return for honoring your father.

B.    And the promise is Long life

III.    Now, fathers don’t let what I said here today go to your head

A.    We are to be the Spiritual leaders of our families

B.    As we read further in the Bible, we find out that honor comes with responsibility.

C.    Honor is something we earn and we need to be the spiritual fathers for our families

Conclusion:

Remember one thing, we are to honor our father 365 days a year when it comes to the Bible and not just on fathers day.
