Gal 3:24

Galatians 3:24, Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith

I.       The Laws was our Schoolmaster

A.    In the Old Testament the Law was like

1.     A child custodian or a tutor

2.     One who taught us the Law and what it was all about

a)     Strict governess is the best way to describe what the law was in the OT

b)     A child in the OT days was “but a slave to whom a son was committed from age six or seven to puberty. These slaves were severe disciplinarians and were charged with guarding the children from the evils of society and giving them moral training”

c)     Luke 18:18-23,18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God. 20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. 21 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up. 22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. 23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich

d)     This is what the law was all about

(1)   Following a set of rules laid down for all to follow

e)     The Law also shows us the need for Gods forgiveness

(1)   Nobody could follow all of the Law

B.    Justifying faith was in effect in the Old Testament but faith in the personal work of Christ did not come until He came to earth and died for our sins.

1.     Romans 4:3,3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness

2.     This took over the Introduction of the law

C.    So the Law was disciplinarian until Christ came

1.     The Law also show us we could not do it

II.     Than Faith came, Look in -

A.    Galatians 3:25, But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster

B.    Remember a child that was born into a family was treated just like a slave unto the appointed time

1.     The Schoolmaster could only teach so much

2.     This is were Christ comes into the picture

a)     Christ could teach us how to get to heaven

(1)   John 14:6, Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me

b)     Christ could teach us as Christians to live a Godly life.

III.    Galatians 3:26, For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus

A.    The word Children here means “sons”

1.     We are a legitimate son now

2.     We are not under a foster parent

a)     When you read about Moses and David, God uses the term servant in the OT

B.    Not until the NT do you read that we are Sons of God.
