Gen. 24:1-9
I. Abraham is 140 years old and will live another 35 years.
A. He concern is that his son marry and marry to the right woman.
1. He also knows God will fulfill His promise through his son.
II. Abraham than makes his most trusted servant swear 3 things.
A. That he would not get a wife form the Caaanites.
B. That he would chose her from Abraham’s relatives.
C. That he would not take Isaac back to his homeland.
III. Abraham now gives his servant some words of encouragement in verses 7,8.
IV. Abraham believed God and acted on his belief. Let me read a section from a book “Be Obedient”
A. Abraham was a man of faith who believed God’s word and knew how to apply it to specific situations and decisions. He sought to obey God’s word because true faith always results in obedience. The more you meditate on God’s Word, the more truth you will see in it and the more direction you will get from it.[1]
1. Proverbs 3:5-6, 5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
B. Now today I want you to see that Abraham is not taking a leap in the dark with his faith.
1. Faith must have some bases, Abraham had God to talk with in person, we have the Bible to read.
2. Have something in writing.
a) Look up promises in the Bible and than go to God with those. You now have something in writing, which God wrote, and you can have faith that God will do what He says.
b) Many people say, “I believe God, and it will come to pass.” They base it on a feeling and not on God's Word. (Boy in Tenn.)
3. Faith is not foolishness; we are to rest on something, which is the Word of God.
V. In verse 6 Abraham tells his servant not to take his son back to find a wife.
A. God's promise was in Cannon and Abraham want his son to stay there were God wants them.
1. Abraham did not want to take any changes of his son being out of God's will.
2. We need to be careful in the things we do, that they are not something, which will pull us out away from God.
VI. Verse 8
A. Abraham is thinking; God has a way of working this out, I may not know what it is, but God will work it out.
B. Faith is acting upon the Word of God.
1. God wants us to believe in His word and not just to believe.
2. James 2:19,19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. (but they are not saved)
3. Acts 19:15,15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?
a) These other people in verses 13-16 were not saved, but they believed.
b) Matthew 7:22-23,22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Conclusion: So we see that Abraham used his faith wisely. He applied it to the Word of God and not just blind faith.
This morning I pray that each of us has gotten a hold of some truth. The truth is that our faith must rest on God's Word. We have to have a foundation in order to support our belief.
