How To Live Like a King’s Kid (Romans, Part 2)
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
We have all made some pretty bad mistakes in our lives...
Failed. Messed up. Did wrong.
We have all been put on the position of having to make things right because of this.
The most serious mistakes we make in life are those that mess up our relationship with God, and take us outside of His plan for our lives.
The Bible identifies four different ways that we human beings mess up ...
TRANSGRESSION - A STEP across the line
4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
Transgression: practice lawlessness - revolt or rebellion. A deliberate breach of law or contract.
13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me: Then shall I be upright, And I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
Presumptuous: insolent, blatant
The sin we are born in.
Pesha, often translated as transgression, is more of a willful rebellion against the given standard.
God said don’t eat the fruit and… THEY DID!
This is what society is caught up in today.
Willful rebellion - What ever authority there is - let’s defy it!
Let’s tear down a statute of President Grant because he is a white man from the mid 1800’s so he must have been bad...
Not realizing he is the president that gave the blacks the right to vote…
It’s rebellion for rebellion’s sake.
Natural state of sinful man.
TRESPASS - A SLIP (THE BANANA PEEL)
17 And if a soul sin, and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the Lord; though he wist it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity.
18 And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and wist it not, and it shall be forgiven him.
19 It is a trespass offering: he hath certainly trespassed against the Lord.
ESV: ...though he did not know it, then realizes his guilt, he shall bear his iniquity.
14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Trespass: to overstep
Day to day blunders.
Heat of the moment.
Anger, lust, jealousy
INIQUITY - A SEPARATION (THE WEDGE)
2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, And your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Awon, often translated as iniquity, relates more to the inner character and points to an intentional twisting of a given standard.
Deals with the inner man.
Who we are on the inside.
The innate ugliness.
This is generational.
The things in a family that are passed from generation to generation.
SIN - A SHORTFALL (THE CANYON)
This final word is the concept most commonly found in the OT and NT to describe our mistakes; it signifies “MISSING THE MARK.”
Here’s the kicker ... Even if it were possible for us not to commit sinful ACTS, we still have a sinful NATURE by birth – that means ALL of us are sinners!
Chattah, which is most often translated as sin, means to miss the mark.
Sin separates us from the righteousness of God.
Righteous: Right - ness or the process of being right...
Sin separated us from the beginning.
Adam and Eve story
God established a temporary way to deal with chattah (sin)...
Sacrifice of animals.
BUT they had to be perfect specimens.
AND they could only push sins ahead of them not remove them.
From the beginning, God had a plan…
Not just to push sins ahead but to take them away!
THE BRIDGE
Vast gulf, chasm, canyon between man and God because of sin.
The Bible tells us that we were created to have a relationship with God.
But because the human race rebelled and walked away from God’s will, we are burdened down with sin.
There is now a “chasm” between us and God that we cannot cross.
We subconsciously spend our entire lives trying to bridge this distance (i.e. being a good person, being religious). But no matter how far we “jump” we still fall miserably short!
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
The bad news is that the penalty for falling short is death!
It’s already too late for every one of us, even if we only broke ONE of God’s laws!
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
This death is not physical death, but spiritual death – for eternity!
There’s no escaping this destiny unless you experience salvation.
Eternity is so long that it would be worth paying ANY PRICE in this life to be saved!
The good news is that God doesn’t expect us to remedy the situation on our own.
In fact, He provided HIMSELF as a sacrifice for our sin!
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
NOTE: Until this moment in today’s lesson, you could be in just about any church, because they basically all believe these things – that man has sinned and that he needs salvation.
BUT THE CRITICAL QUESTION IS “WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT IT?” BECAUSE YOU CAN’T MAKE A MISTAKE ON THIS ONE!
Here’s what Scripture says ...
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Notice that there are three elements here...
First, we must RECEIVE the Lord into our lives
Second, we must believe in such a way that it invokes the NAME of Jesus Christ over our lives
Third, we must allow God to give us the POWER to change us.
**********************
There is only ONE salvation message, regardless of what various denominations say!
It is not that WE are right and THEY are wrong; it is that the BIBLE is right and EVERYONE ELSE is wrong!
4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
Only this Bible message, only the salvation provided by the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross bridges the chasm between us and God.
Only His death, burial and resurrection have the power to stamp out our penalty of eternal death!
Every denomination agrees that we need to RECEIVE the Lord, but so many of them miss the other two elements – taking on His NAME and allowing Him to give us His POWER.

THE CROSS BECOMES THE BRIDGE THROUGH FAITH!
BUT WE CAN ONLY CROSS THE BRIDGE THROUGH OBEDIENCE!
(You can believe in planes all you want, but belief alone won’t allow you to fly across the country!)
Here’s how we cross the bridge ... it’s the ORIGINAL ALTAR CALL of the New Testament church ...
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
The only question is: WHERE ARE YOU IN RELATION TO THE BRIDGE?
1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
