Hebrews 8:5 NKJV
5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”
Colossians 2:17 NKJV
17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.
We are still on our study of holiness and one of the key ideas of God in His masterplan was a set apart (holy) place to live. Now we know that He couldn’t permanently dwell within man in the OT because of man’s fallen nature; therefore, He gave explicit instructions to Moses on how “to make the tabernacle…according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”
Let’s break down some Greek words:
Copy is “to show, forewarn, an example or pattern to be imitated in action.” It’s from a noun (hupodeiknumi) that means “to show plainly…to teach, instruct plainly.” We see right from the start that Moses’ administration and all accomplished under it were to show plainly, to forewarn, and to teach and instruct plainly the coming Messiah and His work. We know for a fact this was the case because Moses told them to look for THE Prophet that would be like him.
Deuteronomy 18:15 NKJV
15 “The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear,
And what was one of Moses’ tasks? To build the tabernacle of God, which implies that one of the Lord’s main tasks will also be building a tabernacle of God but without hands.
John 1:14 NKJV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
Dwelt literally means “tabernacled.”
Daniel 2:44–45 NKJV
44 And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. 45 Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold—the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure.”
Shadow is a “faint archetype which foreshadows a later reality” and a “prefiguring things future and more perfect.” Where the copies were meant to instruct, the shadow is meant to focus our eyes on the future and more perfect, which is genius of the Lord because if there’s not a future to go to, then we get comfortable in our present and begin to lose ground. You only take ground moving forward. Your current revelation occupies territory; your current prophetic word is meant to propel you to take new territory. Both are needed.
Pattern is “a visual form designed to be imitated or copied.” It’s “a type as a model of some reality which was yet to appear, a prototype of that which was yet to be developed and evolved.” We know that the tabernacle was a pattern of the Temple but that wasn’t even it. The tabernacle pointed to an even greater reality.
Hebrews 3:1–6 NKJV
1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, 2 who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house. 3 For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house. 4 For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God. 5 And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, 6 but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.
CHRIST IS OVER HIS HOUSE, WHOSE HOUSE WE ARE. The tabernacle was NOT just a picture of Christ and His work but is also a picture of us who believe! We are now the HOUSE OF GOD, made without hands that will consume all other kingdoms until only one is standing! So when you study the tabernacle, you need to keep in mind that you’re reading about yourself in Christ.

David’s Tabernacle

Acts 15:15–17 NKJV
15 And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written: 16After this I will return And will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down; I will rebuild its ruins, And I will set it up; 17 So that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, Even all the Gentiles who are called by My name, Says the Lord who does all these things.’
Many times in the Bible, the Lord would have a two-fold fulfillment (sometimes more). If you look at the context of this quoted passage in Amos, it’s referring to the destruction of Israel because of her idolatry. Sure enough Israel went into captivity not only with Babylon but was also scattered after the Lord and a remnant returned after WWII and a nation was reborn in a day.
But the complete fulfillment involves the church. And we know that because James quotes this very scripture in regards to us, the church, made up of both Jew and Gentile, but especially in regards to the Gentile. The context of his quoting Amos was whether us Gentiles had to follow the Law once born-again and Holy Spirit inspired this passage to James.
We’re going to look at this more in-depth, but some original manuscripts say “mankind” instead of “Edom.” Now we see that James ascribed it as mankind. What’s kind of scary is the word remnant, which means “a residue, a remainder.” It’s the idea of “that which is left over or remains” like scraps of wood, undesignated territory, etc. Not only will Israel be almost completely destroyed at the end of the age but so will most of mankind.
The main idea is that the Tabernacle of David will be set up so that the rest of mankind might seek the Lord, so there’s a connection to evangelism and building His church or dwelling using living stones both Jew and Gentile.
But why David’s and not Moses or Solomon’s temple?
1 Chronicles 16:1–6 NKJV
1 So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tabernacle that David had erected for it. Then they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God. 2 And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord. 3 Then he distributed to everyone of Israel, both man and woman, to everyone a loaf of bread, a piece of meat, and a cake of raisins. 4 And he appointed some of the Levites to minister before the ark of the Lord, to commemorate, to thank, and to praise the Lord God of Israel: 5 Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, and Obed-Edom: Jeiel with stringed instruments and harps, but Asaph made music with cymbals; 6 Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests regularly blew the trumpets before the ark of the covenant of God.
1 Chronicles 16:37–40 NKJV
37 So he left Asaph and his brothers there before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister before the ark regularly, as every day’s work required; 38 and Obed-Edom with his sixty-eight brethren, including Obed-Edom the son of Jeduthun, and Hosah, to be gatekeepers; 39 and Zadok the priest and his brethren the priests, before the tabernacle of the Lord at the high place that was at Gibeon, 40 to offer burnt offerings to the Lord on the altar of burnt offering regularly morning and evening, and to do according to all that is written in the Law of the Lord which He commanded Israel;
This is very interesting. This is the “Tale of Two Tabernacles.” David’s tabernacle was pitched in the City of David while Moses tabernacle was 10 miles down from Jerusalem at Gibeon and it was there that all the requirements of Moses’ law were observed. It reminds me of the transition from Law to faith for the early church post-Jesus. Both ran simultaneously for a time in the church until their understanding grew. Paul even stated that the old covenant was dying, fading away.
But at David’s tabernacle, it was 24/7 worship. The only blood sacrifices were at Moses’ tabernacle. The only sacrifices at David’s were praise and thanksgiving. His tabernacle represented PRESENCE for the manifest presence of God was with the ark. This is astonishing because the ark was separated from the Law or you could say that the Presence was separated from the Law until both were brought back together after Solomon completed the temple.
The main idea is that David saw a future where the Presence of God was fully accessible by the people of God and the only sacrifices were praise, thanksgiving, and worship. His faith in that future reality brought it into his present and sanctified it. And Father loved it! That’s why David was a man after His own heart. He was Presence-driven. When he repented of his sin with Bathsheba, he cried out, “Please don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.” Could it be that the remnant that will remain of the people of God are those who are Holy Spirit focused (the 10 virgins)?
GO INTO DAVID’S TABERNACLE AND WHY GOD IS REBUILDING IT NOT MOSES.
Heb 9:23-24; Ezra 9:8 is very interesting.
