God is good to His Promises
Introduction:
1 Kings 8:56-58 “Blessed be the Lord, who has given rest to His people Israel, according to all that He promised. There has not failed one word of all His good promise, which He promised through His servant Moses.
57 May the Lord our God be with us, as He was with our fathers. May He not leave us nor forsake us,
58 that He may incline our hearts to Himself, to walk in all His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, which He commanded our fathers.
Solomon is addressing his people and praying to God here dedicating the Temple
I. We see in Verse 56 Solomon talking about God and promises He made to His people back in the days of Moses
A. Solomon was praising God here for keeping all His promises which He gave to Moses
B. Solomon is telling his people here not one promise failed
1. A time period of some 400 to 700 years
II. In verse 57 Solomon is telling the people that God can do for them what He did for Moses
A. Solomon said that God has been faithful and that they should be faithful to God
B. Joshua 23:14, And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof
C. Joshua 21:45, There failed not ought of any good thing which the LORD had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass
D. And they are to have a thankful heart
1. Ephesians 5:20, Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ
2. Colossians 1:3, We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you
3. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18,16 Rejoice evermore. 17 Pray without ceasing. 18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you
4. There are 43 verses in the Bible saying to give thanks to God
5. And we see here in 1 Kings 8 Solomon thanking God and reminding the people that God keep His part of the bargan
E. Another thing God can do is give rest
1. Wonderful rest in knowing that God is in control and helping us through all the problems we will face.
2. Solomon understood this and is telling his people not to forsake God.
III. In verse 58 Solomon tells the people what they must do to continually get God's blessings
A. Incline our hearts to God
1. This means to turn to God
2. To stretched out before God is another meaning
a) The same way Moses did before God
b) Fall down before God
B. Walk in all His ways
1. Means our manor of life
2. In the Hebrew it comes out as the “journey of life”
3. We are to be escorted with the ways of God in our journey of life
C. And last but not least, keep God's commandments
1. We have the Bible here and each week we learn from it
2. We are to keep watch of the things we are doing, mark them and change to do what God wants us to do
3. We are to be secure in them
a) As we obey God's word we become secure because we know He will take care of us
Conclusion:
Here we see that God will fulfill his promise if we do what He wants us to do.
We have a recorded here that we can read and know that God is true to His word.
We can take it to the bank
