Soul Defined:
“Can refer to the Whole person, alive or after death; can designate the immaterial part of a person with its many feelings and emotions; an important focus of spiritual redemption and growth.” - Charles C. Ryrie

Important Question:
Jesus often used question to cause the people to think about a situation or idea he was presenting.
Mark 8:36 KJV 1900
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
What is the emphasis of this verse? The Soul
This is comparing the difference between “whole world” and “own soul”
What is measured in this verse? The Soul
The whole word is gained and the soul is lost or forfeited.
Jesus is not making a Judicial statement, but rather a shrewd business statement. Jesus was engaging the audience in terms they would readily understand the different in profit and loss.
“profit” means to be beneficial for
“lose” means to forfeit being financially penalized
