Matthew 5:4 NASB95
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Too often these verses are viewed as blessing given to different groups of people.
But that isn’t what is going on here
These are not isolated Blessings to different groups of people.
These are blessing that belong to the same group of people.
More specifically,.Jesus is expounding upon the blessings that belong those who are in Christ.
Essentially what Jesus is doing here is giving a list of blessings for those who are in Christ.
This is why we began last week with verse 3.
Matthew 5:3 NASB95
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Remember how we defined poor in Spirit.
Those who know that they are poor. Those who know that in themselves are broke spiritually. They know their own sin. Their own need.
Those who are fully aware that their only hope is Christ. Those are who will be apart of the kingdom of heaven.
Its the sick, that go to the doctor for help.
Theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Now, he speaks of another blessing to the same group of people.
Matthew 5:4 NASB95
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Those who realize their spiritual bankruptcy, will mourn.
The mourning that he is referencing here goes back to the previous verse.
the reason they are mourning is they realize just how poor they are.
the mourning here is not speaking of just general grief and sorrow over a situation that you are going through.
This verse isn’t saying that everyone who cried or mourns over something that has gone on in their life will be comforted.
Every one at some point or another goes through a difficulty that cause them to grieve.
He’s not saying here that everyone who grieves will be comforted.
This verse is in reference to mourning over one’s sin.
What he is saying is Everyone who grieves over their sin, will be comforted.
Everyone grieves, but not everyone grieves over their sin.
Some rejoice in their sin.
In fact, most rejoice over their sin. They celebrate their rebellion against God.
If you don’t believe this, look at the laws of our country.
Look at Facebook.
People do not grieve over their sin.
They may grieve for other reasons, but they don’t grieve over their sin.
People in general, unbelievers, they fail to see their greatest problem.
The greatest problem humans have is not financial problems.
It is not social problems.
It is not political problems.
It is not physical problems.
It is not psychological problems.
The greatest problem humans have is a spiritual problem, and that problem is sin.
Until we mourn over sin, everything else is secondary.
And until we mourn over our sin, there is no comfort for anything else.
So I guess the question that has to be asked is this.
Why do we fail to mourn over sin?
I think the failure to mourn over sin happens for two reasons.
We underestimate our own sin.
We underestimate God and his holiness.
“No doubt one reason we fail to mourn sin is because we underestimate it. We assume it’s little more than a cosmic parking ticket. But sin is not trivial; it is treason, an insurrection against heaven’s throne. We have never committed a small sin because we have never offended a small God.”
Matt Smethurst
We underestimate our sin.
When we sin in anyway. we are saying to the God who has created everything we see, we will do it our way. We are going to be God right now.
That’s what sin is. There are no small sins. That category doesn’t exist. Sin is rebellion against God. Period.
And we are far more rebellious sinful than we think.
We also tend to underestimate how seriously God’s takes our sin.
I pray God would give us eyes to see the depth of our sin. Then and ONLY then will we mourn over it.
And then and ONLY then can be be comforted.
We need godly sorrow. Godly mourning.
Turn with me to 2 Corinthians 7:10-13
look at verse 10
2 Corinthians 7:10 NASB95
For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.
Two types of sorrow.
How do we know we are mourning in a godly way?
According to 2 Corinthians 7:10?
When we repent.
When we turn from sin, and pursue God.
And when we have godly mourning over our sin, then, we are comforted.
Matthew 5:4 NASB95
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
How?
By the hope of the Gospel.
We are comforted by Christ.
We have true hope because our greatest problem has been dealt with in Christ.
Application:
Equip the Saints
Mourn over your sin. Repent.
My prayer tonight is that our sin sin would grieve us deeply. When’s the last time you wept over your own sin?
When you weep over your sin, you are comforted by Christ.
Practically. When we are attempting to address problems in our world.
It is not social problems.
It is not political problems.
It is not physical problems.
It is not psychological problems.
The greatest problem humans have is a spiritual problem, sin, and the solution then is the Gospel.
Realize that the greatest problem anyone has is their own sin.
Preach the Gospel.
Romans 1:16 NASB95
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Life
I know that this goes against the willynillyness of the world. But as believers, we should live a life in constant repentance. our sin should bother us.
Paul constantly did this.
1 Timothy 1:15 NASB95
It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.
Romans 7:18 NASB95
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not.
Look at Psalm 51 for a biblical example of what it means to repent.
Doctrine
We must understand sin for what it is.
We must also take comfort in the Gospel.
This is exactly what Paul does here.
Romans 7:24–8:1 NASB95
Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin. Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
