Gods promise to us
Moses final Challenge, he is about to die. He is 120 and Joshua is going to take his place.
Deuteronomy 30:10-18,
10 If you obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this Book of the Law, and if you turn to the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with all your being.
11 For this commandment which I command you this day is not too difficult for you, nor is it far off.
12 It is not [a secret laid up] in heaven, that you should say, Who shall go up for us to heaven and bring it to us, that we may hear and do it?
13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that you should say, Who shall go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear and do it?
14 But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your mind and in your heart, so that you can do it.
15 See, I have set before you this day life and good, and death and evil.
16 [If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which] I command you today, to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His ordinances, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land into which you go to possess.
17 But if your [mind and] heart turn away and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them,
18 I declare to you today that you shall surely perish, and you shall not live long in the land which you pass over the Jordan to enter and possess.
I. If you take the Bible and read it God will help you grow.
A. That is a promise God has made to all people.
1. Joshua 1:8, This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
B. When you read the Bible a by product comes from reading. You start growing.
1. I like to challenge people to read the Bible through in a year.
a) You can do it by reading 5 days a week or 7 days a week.
2. Read a different translation each year.
II. The Bible is not difficult for us to learn.
A. The more you read it, the more you will understand it.
B. It is like a puzzle that comes together once you get to know all the pieces.
1. Even the genealogies can be a blessing.
a) Rahab the harlot.
C. So when you read the Bible and you did not understand a thing, that’s ok.
1. Give it time and the next time you read it a little more understanding will occur.
2. This is what we call Illumination.
III. The Bible is not some secret that a chose few can know.
A. Some will have you believe that you must be a pastor or some Dr. of Phd to understand the Bible.
B. One can go to the Greek and Hebrew with books today and find out what the original language says.
1. By the way, I can get you a set of books that even a pastor might have for free if you have a computer.
IV. God has set before you this day, life and good, death and evil.
A. When you start reading the Bible your life changes to the good.
1. If you know Christ as your personal Savior this will happen.
B. If as a Christian you don’t read the Bible it can be a life of misery.
1. It has been said that the most miserable person in the world is not an unsaved person, but a Christian out of the will of God.
Conclusion:
As Joshua once said,
Joshua 24:15,15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
Life is full of chooses, which one will you pick today.
Will it be life with God?
Or Life without God?
It is your chose.
Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
Joshua 1:9, Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
