Introduction: 1 Samuel 8:1-10. Here we have the Jews of Israel asking for a King to rule over them. God wanted to rule over them.
Samuel is about 54 years old at this time and has judge Israel for 12 years. The Jews look at his two son and saw that they were no good and started to do their own thinking and not looking to God.
I) Israel rejects God as their King. (Verse 7)
A. God is the perfect King. He appoints, judges and prophets.
B. God had shown Himself a great King and God over them.
C. As long as they were serving God (seeking Him) God was there helping them every step of the way.
II) Now in verse 5 Israel wants a King. (Verse 5)
A. Moses had predicted that one day Israel would have a King, but at God's timing and not what Israel wanted.
1. Deuteronomy 17:14,14 When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me.
A. No human King is perfect.
B. God tell Samuel the things a King will do to Israel. (1 Samuel 8:11-18)
D. In verses 4-6 Israel is leaning unto their own understanding and not God's.
1. Proverbs 3:5, Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
III) God wants Israel to obey Him.
A. Israel had a unique rule of being God's special people.
B. When they left Egypt God lead them by a cloud by day and fire by night.
E. Isaiah 12:2,2 Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.
F. Proverbs 16:3, Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
We need no one other than God running our lives. He will take care of us. Be strong in the Lord. Seek Him while you can.
Look to God for everything and look unto others more than yourself.
