Bring them here!
Bring them here!
The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.” Samuel did what the Lord commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, “Do you come peaceably?” He said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is now before the Lord.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.” He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.
Intro:
I believe that we have to challenge ourselves as an entire community to go back and find the David’s we may have overlooked.....
And I’m not just talking to the physical Fathers on today in terms of our individual households, but I’m talking to our entire community as we FATHER the next generations!
(pause and expound)
Look at it now.....
16.1-5 (Summarize only)
We are thrust into today’s text at a place where God is ready to take action through the prophet Samuel in the search for another King for Israel to replace Saul....
(pause)
And after God questions Samuel’s grief pattern over Saul he immediately gives instructions, and one of the first things if not the very first thing he tells Samuel to do is to....
“Fill his horn with Oil!”
(pause)
God tells him that he is sending him to Jesse the bethlemite to find the next King........
......but before he even tellls him where he is going he says,
“Take the Oil with you!”
(pause)
I find that significant because in my mind it substantiates the need for.....
An Anointing that is always connected to an Assignment or a Purpose
(pause and expound)
Now.....
......when Samuel begins to consider the instructions of God he becomes fearful that if Saul finds out that he is out looking for another King as his replacement there would be major conflict.
And so.....
......God gives Samuel a strategy of remaining disgused in his purpose to ease his mind.
(slight pause)
And so......
......finally we see Samuel setting out headed towards Jesse’s house.
And when he arrives and begins searching out which one of Jesse’s son would be the next king he soon finds out that this is going to be harder than he thought......
(pause)
Because.....
......after he has assured the elders of the city that he has come in peace
......and after he has consecrated Jesse and his sons for the sacrifice
It becomes very clear that God is not choosing anybody Jesse is presenting to him.......
(pause)
Watch the text....verse 6
When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is now before the Lord.”
Samuel examines Eliab and says in his mind....
“There’s..........No doubt this is the one that God is looking for!”
(pause)
But in verse 7 he finds out that God is not choosing with the same tools that are normally used in the selection process
(pause)
Look at it.....
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
According to the text God says.....
“Hold up Samuel, that aint who I’m looking for!”
You see....
There’s a certain way this search has to happen......
I’m not concerned with how good they look.......
.....and I’m not concerned with how tall they are in stature
(slight pause)
But instead.....
“I look at the heart!”
And the reason why these things are not important is because I don’t need to find someone who looks like they are already great.....
(pause)
Because......
Remember Samuel.....
you are carrying the Oil......
......and once I find a match at the heart level I’m going to perform a “GREATNESS INSTALL” and annoint the one I’m choosing.
(pause)
You see....
......The Oil does not look for a vessel that looks good on the outside
But....
......The Oil looks for a vessel that looks good on the inside
And Freedom family....
God is qualified to search our hearts......
Because the bible says that God is light and there is no darkness in him.....
So if anybody is able to look behind every hiding place and every dark spot in our lives it is the God who created us.......
.......who is able to light up our lives and search us!
And i’m not so much certain that it is our goodness that makes our heart so good
.......but I believe it has something to do with our willingness to be searched!
And I believe it has something to do with our willingness to be used for God’s glory and cause!
(pause)
Because when I look at my own life........
I can tell you this.....
I am NOT Anointed because I have been so good.......
But..........
God’s Grace found me willing to be searched
........and willing to be used!
(pause)
And so God tells Samuel,
“Keep looking!”
(pause)
And......
......in verse 8 - 10 one by one all of Jesse’s sons are brought in front of Samuel and each time God keeps sayin,
“Keep looking!”
(pause)
And then in verse 11.....
Samuel asks Jesse a question, because it seems as though Jesse does not intend to bring out anymore sons,
but God is telling Samuel to........
“Keep Looking!”
(pause)
And so just to be sure he isn’t crazy........
Samuel asks Jesse a question and says,
“Are all your sons here?”
(pause)
Now I want you to pay attention to Jesse’s response to this question....
Jesse says,
“There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep!”
(pause)
And here’s what struck me as significant right here......
Because....
At this point I believe Jesse understands that Samuel is looking for one of his sons to annoint as King.
(pause)
But when it comes to David.......
for at least two reasons......
Jesse doesn’t even include David as a possibility!
(pause)
One of those reasons according to the text is........
Because he is the youngest
The second reason according to the text is.....
ii. Because he is keeping the sheep
(pause)
Now.......
It’s interesting that these two reasons are used to keep David out of the running..........
But in all actuality........
These are the exact two reasons that I believe are qualifying David for kingship!
(pause)
Because what I hear God saying is.......
“I don’t look at the outside, but I look at the heart!”
And......
David’s heart says,
I am willing - “Keeping the sheep”
and......
I am able - “the youngest”
(pause)
And then that’s when I begin to wonder who are the David’s that are being Overlooked!
Because.......
Folk have a tendency to miss David for the same reason God chooses David
(pause and expound)
As a matter of fact if we would be honest.......
This process of being overlooked is actually a very close parrallel of rejection.....
Because Jesse you were told to bring all of your sons before Samuel.......
But......
.........according to the text you left DAVID out because you didn’t think he was an option!
(pause)
Freedom family,
What do you do when your Father rejects you?
(pause)
Now That’s Rough!!! - Expound on being rejected
(pause)
I wonder if there’s anybody who has ever felt the sting of rejection........
(slight pause)
And so.....
.......as I studied and watched the text unfold I wondered to myself
Self who represents David in today’s text?
(pause)
And....
in my spiritual imagination I saw our David’s......
(slight pause)
I saw an entire generation that we have fathered and overlooked
And God is sitting back ready to take action to get us out of a problem!
(preach Baker......)
They have been overlooked because they are the youngest
They have been overlooked because they don’t look like the rest
And so we have rejected them because they don’t fit the look to deserve the anointing
But what if.........
We’re looking for the WRONG thing!
And what if.......
They’re not supposed to fit what’s considered Mainstream or Common......
and instead they are supposed to fit into Divine Order.........
(pause)
But.......
We keep passing on a spirit of rejection.....
And......
God wants us to pass on an annointing......
(pause)
We keep buying into a narrative that we have been told is true,
but is it really?
Who said the Millenial generation is in trouble?
I say......
It’s the Millenial generation that’s going to get us out of trouble!
(pause)
(optional - I’m starting to question everything.......
Because half of the story I keep hearing sound like a bunch of Haterade!
Aint nothing wrong with David.....)
(pause)
And when Jesse tells Samuel that David is out tending the sheep....
Samuel says to Jesse,
“Bring him here!”
(pause)
“We can’t sit down and go any further.......
......until David gets here!”
(pause and expound option)
And watch the text.....
Because.....
When David shows up!
(pause)
The bible says not only does he have the right look
......but he’s got the right heart!
(pause)
And God says,
“Rise and anoint him; for this is the one!”
(slight pause)
One Aramaic or Hebrew translation says,
“this one is Good!”
(pause)
Isn’t it funny how David got looked over by Jesse........
......but God isn’t satisfied until David is standing in front of Samuel!
(pause and expound)
And the bible says that Samuel rises and anoints David in verse 13......
.....and as soon as he starts pouring the Oil something happens!
Look at it.......
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.
Freedom watch this........
The bible says that.....
It is the Anointing that breaks the yoke!
Now let me make it plain.......
(pause)
Jesus says in Luke 4.18
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
Jesus says,
I’m Anointed to Break some stuff apart!
(pause)
And as Samuel is pouring the oil over David in my Spiritual imagination............
I see everything that needs to break in David’s life in order for him to be God’s chosen one falling apart!
(pause)
Because the bible says....
“that the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward!”
(pause)
And that’s when it hit me Freedom.....
Maybe our David’s.......
Our Sons and our daughters who are waiting in the field
can stop falling apart.....
.....if we would go ahead and call them IN
to get an Anointing that will break every yoke!
“Bring THEM here!”
And Freedom family........
even though Jesse initially failed to include David
........Samuel charged him with the responsibility to get him to the right place!
And Freedom I’m challenging all of us.......
.......Bring the David’s here!!!!
