The Light of the World

Jesus’ claim to the be Light of the world was not intended to be a singular statement of acknowledgement, but a continual call to follow His example and reproduce His works in the earth.
As a result, Jesus as the Light must be
1. acknowledged
2. embraced
3. followed
Gods’ First work = LIGHT
Gen 1:3 (ESV) And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

The Word Became Light

John 1:4–8 (ESV)
4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him.
8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
John 1:9–12 ESV
9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,

1 – Light must Be ACKNOWLEDGED

John 3:16–21 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

Light heals the Darkness

John 9:5 ESV

Jesus made mud from spit – man washed in pool of Siloam.

Example of Light #1 - Jesus is the Light for Understanding

Luke 2:32 ESV
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”

Example of Light #2 – Light of Glory – Mount of Transfiguration

Matthew 17:1–2 (ESV)
1 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.

2 – Light Must be EMBRACED

Walk in the Light While You Can

End of Jesus’ ministry – Triumphal Entry
John 12:35–36 ESV
35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.
John 12:46 ESV
46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.

3 – Light Must Be FOLLOWED

The Church is to Shine Jesus’ Light to the World
Matthew 5:14–16 ESV
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
