Mark 5:21-43

Hero
We talk about heroes. All the time. People on the front line. Our workers, volunteers. All of you there helping those around you
If you are following our trek through the life of Jesus you might realize that we are out of order. Yes I have jumped around a bit, but were not too far off. We are still early in His career during the time when he is popular.

Mark 5:21–24 LEB
And after Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered to him, and he was beside the sea. And one of the rulers of the synagogue came—Jairus by name—and when he saw him, he fell down at his feet. And he was imploring him many times, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death! Come, lay your hands on her, so that she will get well and will live.” And he went with him, and a large crowd was following him and pressing around him.
Immediately we see that Jesus is being crowded with people wanting him to heal them and to see what he will do next. These are not all believers. Some of them are and will remain faithful. Some of them just don’t have TV. Some are undecided.
A man name Jairus comes and begs him to heal his dying daughter. This man has heard of the wondrous powers of Jesus and he is at the last straw. She is dying. He is going to find Jesus. He has the power to save her.
Desperate he goes to Jesus.
Jesus doesn’t have to go. There are people everywhere hurting and he doesn’t heal them all. There are people crowding around him He doesn’t listen to them all.
Here you have a man of faith that says, “come and she will be healed”. Jesus could have just said she is healed. He has done actions like that in the past. But He goes. And on the way pushing through the crowd to save this girl there is an interruption
Mark 5:24–34 LEB
And he went with him, and a large crowd was following him and pressing around him. And there was a woman who was suffering from hemorrhages twelve years. And she had endured many things under many physicians, and had spent all that she had and had received no help at all, but instead became worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind him and touched his cloak, for she was saying, “If I touch just his clothing, I will be healed!” And immediately her hemorrhage stopped and she realized in her body that she was healed of her suffering. And immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from himself, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothing?” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing upon you, and you say ‘Who touched me?’ ” And he was looking around to see the one who had done this. So the woman, frightened and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. But he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be well from your suffering.”
Picture it
They are pushing through the crowd in a hurry to save the dying girl and Jesus stops.
Who touched my garments?
What do you mean there are tons of people here pushing on you they all have
We should have hired private security if your going to be complaining about people touching you
But this woman was the culprit
She believed with all her heart that if she just touched his cloths she would be cured
The faith of this woman seems to pulled the power which Jesus, being fully God and fully man, possessed right out of Him.
She had been hurting not just physically but she was an outcast. People didn’t want her around she was unclean.
If she could just get healed she could be clean. Which was more important in that society than the physical aliments. But blood was one of the things that made you unclean.
As we read this we have to remember we have trouble with diseases and infections now. Blood is not safe to be around in a society such as this
But her faith heals her and she is cleansed
But while on this interruption this time of cleansing
Mark 5:35 LEB
While he was still speaking, they came from the synagogue ruler’s house saying, “Your daughter has died. Why trouble the Teacher further?”
Can you just imagine, you were hurry and then Jesus stopped and you didn’t make it in time. What heart break. Anger for Jesus stopping. Anger at the woman for grabbing the garment. Anger at yourself for not being faster. Anger at God for taking her
Mark 5:36–43 LEB
But Jesus, ignoring what was said, told the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid—only believe!” And he did not allow anyone to follow along with him except Peter and James and John, the brother of James. And they came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue and saw a commotion, and people weeping and wailing loudly. And when he entered, he said to them, “Why are you agitated and weeping? The child is not dead, but is sleeping.” And they began laughing at him. But he sent them all out and took along the father and mother of the child, and those who were with him, and went in to where the child was. And taking hold of the child’s hand, he said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”), and immediately the girl stood up and began walking around (for she was twelve years old). And immediately they were utterly and completely astonished. And he commanded them strictly that no one should learn of this, and said to give her something to eat.
Jesus knows differently. Jesus can heal. Why are you crying she is only a sleep and the people laugh
Same kind of laugh Sarah laughed if you remember in Genesis, when she is told she is going to have a child in her 90’s way after menopause
This is the laugh of desperation.
This is the laugh of your crazy
This is the laugh of anger
This is the laugh of a tad bit of hope even though there is no chance
But Jesus tells her get up and she does. He brings her back to life and tell them she needs food. She needs nourishment. This story isn’t about healing. This is an amazing story of faith.
The faithful and the power of God to work in and through the faithful.
This is the story of Heroes
Who are the heroes in this story?
Jesus, he is a given
The woman is a hero. She had to faith to reach out and grab the garment. That is why she is remembered. She has the faith. She is a hero just because she had the faith to believe.
There are people all over the world that will be remembered for the action of faith just to reach out and grab in faith
Their names will be remembered in the lambs book of life
This is the book that contains the names of all who are followers of Christ
ABC
True believers that follow after God, through the power of the Holy Spirit that enters into you and guides you, through the blood of Jesus Christ the ultimate sacrifice for the punishment of our sins
Jairus is a hero because he had the faith to reach out to Jesus, hoping that He could heal his daughter. But he was also a hero because faith because he had the faith to go to bring Jesus to this little girl.
You can be the same hero you can bring Jesus to others and save their life
Jesus came to save the lost and the dying from hell form eternal judgment
From eternal separation from the blessing of God

Are you going to be a hero today?
