Introduction:The death of Christ. Share segment form little Sunday School book I found from 1985.
Transition: We are going to focus our attention on three major aspects of Jesus’ death.
The sin
The sin
horror of the penalty of crusifixion
the slander, mocking, derision of the passers by.
darkness of the day
Why did Jesus die?
Voluntarily, willing laid down His life. (not a martyr) John 10:17-18
For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
The cross creates common ground. Provides answer to equality. All are guilty. (Eph. 2:11-18)
Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.
see page 63 Stott on Cross of Christ.
Transition: Octavius Winslow once said, “Who delivered up Jesus to die? Not Judas, for money; not Pilate, for fear; not the Jews, for envy; but the Father for love!”
The substitution
The substitution
The sinners that died on either side of Christ. One having his sin placed on Christ, the other dying with the penalty of his sin upon him.
For those who are made alive in Christ, the record of sin debt is canceled because it was nailed to the cross. (Col. 2:13-14)
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
The cross of Christ takes away all boasting. (Gal 6:14)
But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
Transition: Illustration of bicycle spokes or three crosses.
The satisfaction
The satisfaction
a. Truly the Son of God. Centurion Confession. Extension of faith to the gentiles.
b. The penalty for those who trust in Christ has been satisfied by the death of Christ. background of requirements (without the shedding of blood…)
c. Big point.. Hebrews 9 Jesus is better
d. Access to God by demonstration of the veil in the temple being torn in two.
e. Certainty and verification of both followers and haters of His death and burial.
Have I turned from sin and trusted in the satisfying death of Christ in my place?
