Acts 2:22–23 ESV
“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.

God’s Plan

Jesus of Nazareth
a Man (fully 100% man)
Attested by God
Attested - Affirmed to be True/Genuine by God
How? - Works, Wonders, Signs God did through Him
Like what? - Water into wine; Feeding 5000 dudes plus women and children at one time; bringing people back from the dead… Rising himself frem the Dead.
Delivred up according to the definate plan and forknowlege of God
Jesus dying on the cross was not an accednt - Not Plan B
If Isreal would have accepted Jesus as their Messiah, Jesus would have still died on the Cross
Why? It was the plan - He was still going to pay for the sin of all who trust Him.
God knew Isreal would not accept Jesus as their messiah but that does not remove their option to accept Him. God was willing to have that happen but knew it would not occure
You killed by the hands of lawless men
The people it the crowd didn’t kill jesus did they?
No - Well Some of them - Part of the mob that told pilot to Crucify Jesus… They why the You?
Peter is talking to the Jews in Jeruselem, - as in it was a genreal mob that got Jesus killed
Not you, you the jews in General - The bible is full of people who are the figurehead of a group
think Abraham and Isreal
or think Adam and Humanity
or Jesus and the Church
No the Jews they were not alone, the mob used lawless men
who is this?
The romans were the ones who phsicaly crucified Jesus but it is not a stretch for peter to be refering to gentiles in Genreal
Gentiles - Who? - You probubly, me, anyone who is now jewish.
by combining the two who is innocent in Jesus’ death? no one, jews and gentiles alike, we are all responsible.
and yet even then - if humanty would have refused God still had a plan in play, a plan to save the world through the sacrifice of His Son Jesus, and yet he knew he would not have to do it himself. Humanity would reject Jesus and through that Crucify Him to what apears to be their harm but actualy for their benifit.
This has been God’s plan all along
to send Jesus to die for all humaity that He would be the subtitutinary sacrifice for our sin.
He knowing no sin, became sin for us, that we might be with God.
But Jesus did not stay dead. He rose again because death itself could not hold Him!
Acts 2:24–33 ESV
God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. For David says concerning him, “ ‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’ “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
Whats amazing is King David had insite to this centuries before Jesus was a twinkle in Marries eye

David’s Insite

David is glad down to his heart. so much so it came out in praise he couldn’t hold it in - the core of his being- why?
David says God would not abandon his soul to Hades
Hades? The grave or the location of departed spirits.
God would not abandon him to the grave
but wasnt he abandoned to the grave?
Peter says David died, and was burried
the tomb of david was well known and even known (general considered) to this day.
Where paul was talking from could not be far from where David was burried and all the jewish people would know it
David was dead and burried
God would not let his Holy One see corruption
Just as David died his body did see corruption
We all will… generaly speaking
out bodies will all rot when we die. Modern methods have made the body almost impervious to rot even without a steady diet of twinikies. but our bodys just as davids body sees corruption as it rots after death.
Peter brings this up
if David was abandond to the grave
If davids body was corruptted with rot
Says with confidenct - Love that - Look guys, i know this with out a doutbt. I am absolutly confident that David is dead and his body rotted out.
but this mean this Psalm of prais would not be about David -David must of seen, known, or experianced something beyond. What was it?
Peter goes so far as to say David was as prophet
David knew God was trustworthy so when God said he would set one of his decendents on his throne, David knew with out a shadow of a doubt God would do what He promised.
With out knowing (most likly, but hey maybe he did) David forsaw and spoke of what would happen to the Christ
Christ? Greek word for Messiah
Messiah? Savior, Delivorer
God made known to him paths of life full of gladness with God’s presense
It was this decendent who David was speaking of (knowing or unkowingly).
Jesus is of the line of David. He could have been king
Jesus’ was not abandond to the grave - it could not hold him - He rose again
Jesus’ body was not corrucped, it did not rot because he ROSE AGIAN!!!
How could the heares of this be sure of what they were saying?
Peter and the 119 with him saw Jesus alive!
The had been with Jesus durring the 40 days after the resurecton Jesus taught them of the Kingdom of God to come
They were there as Jesus levetated/assended into the cloud back to be with the Father
Those men and women had Seen it! those around could be sure it was not a fluke, tall tale, or fable. This was truth.
Beyond what those men and women saw what was happening right befor them was making it obvious
The Holy Spirit was sent by Jesus to the 120 who were now speaking in difrent languages all around them telling the world about the amazing deeds of God!
What they were currently exeriancing was the proof that what these people said was true
But Peter dosen’t stop there
Acts 2:34–36 ESV
For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” ’ Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
wait what?
Jesus assendend/floated/flew/levetated into heaven to be with the father
David did not
how do we know?
David said
The Lord said to my Lord sit at my right hand untill i make you enemies your footsool.
oh ok… no wait… what
Who is the Lord of my Lord especially of the man who is writing this is the King of Isreal (david)
David’s Lord would be Jesus essentialy
the Lord of Jesus would be God the Father
so the Father is greater than Jesus?
no - the Father and Jesus are equal in power, ability, and athority
then…
Jesus submits to the Father though He is entirly equal with the Father
Much like marriage. The wife submitts to her husband though she is fully equal and sometimes more competent than her husband.
So the the Lord of the King is Jesus and the Lord of Jesus is the Father
Not sure i got that right? look at what Peter says
God (the Father) has made Him (Jesus) both Lord...
Lord? - King (remeber the promise to David to have one of his decendenants on his throne. God has not forgoten this, nor will He allow a promise to go unfufilled)
and Christ - Savior/Messiah
This is the Jesus that the nation of Isreal with the help of the Gentiles crucifed

Crowd’s Responce

Acts 2:37 ESV
Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
Cut to the Heart - Like a prison shive -this rocked them to their core
do you hear the sense of panic - they belive but they dont know what to do about it
Acts 2:38–41 ESV
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
What did they need to do?
Repent
Be baptised?
is Peter saying they had to be baptised to be saved? No
Here in Acts in other places he does not say that in Acts 5:31; 10:43; 13:38; 26:18
Lets look at Acts 13:36-39
Acts 13:36-39
Acts 13:36–39 ESV
For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption, but he whom God raised up did not see corruption. Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.
Peter is not saying you have to be baptized to be saved. Be baptized as a recognizance of repenting and being saved.
there does seem to be something missing though doesn’t there?
What about belive?
These people alleready belived, thats why they were asking what they should do
If that seem to convient there is anotehr side. To repent you have to belive. You dont repent
repent?
Chanhge your outlook
Have a change of heart
Reverse direction 180 degrees
To have that change of course in heart and action requires belief to occure.
And did they?
yes 3k people came to Jesus that day
What started with 120 people in a house celebrating the feast of weeks became the launch of the Ekklesia of over 3000 people
Now that is church planting
This is great but so what?
1st - You may be asking yourself what must I do?
Acts 16:31
Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and You will be saved
Believe Jesus is God
Believe You need a savior to redeem you from the life you re living and the eternity you are headed to
Believe Jesus life,Death, Resurrection is the entire sacrifice needed for you
Do this and you will be saved
then repent - turn your life from the way you are living to the life of Christ and day by day you will be more like Jesus
Until one day you will be with Him
If this is a decision you want to make - would you pray with me right now?
I belive
I repent
Save me
Thank you

Small Group Questions
We grow best in the community. When we gather and discuss God’s word in a safe environment we grow more like Him. If you are here at Crossroads we encourage you to join a Small Group and talk over the Questions below. The Questions in Bold, are great places for your group to start. The other questions are for further study. May God Bless you in your pursuit of Him - Pastor Neil
1) Have you ever taught some one something (it could be anything)? What did you teach them? Was it important or them to know? why or why not? How did it feel to teach them?
2) Read Acts 2:22-41
3) What is going on in this passage? What is Peter doing? Peter was just a regular guy, a fisherman, where did he learn all of this? Does it make sense you you? What do you have questions about? Do you think Peter always knew these things? How did He learn them? What was the goal of Peters teaching? Do you think you could tell people about Jesus like that? Why or why not? Have you ever talked about the things of God like this? What or why not?
4) If Peter was a regular guy, who learned and was empowered by the Holy Spirit, could you teach others about God? It would not have to be like this but could you bring God up, be God’s witness? Where could you do it? Who could you talk to? What areas are you already in or what relationships do you already have that you could bring God up in? if you cant bring God up, why not? How can we at Crossroads help? What is the goal of telling people about Jesus?
5) If You were in the crowd and Peter said to repent would you? why or why not? What keeps you from following God whole heatedly? What will you repent of to start following Jesus closer this week? Look in Acts 2:25-28; is that how you feel about God? How will you draw closer to God this week so your heart can be glad? Need help? Ask us, we want to help :)
