4 “Keep The Sabbath” | Healthy Habit or Holy Destination?

Thesis: The Sabbath is a day of remembrance of God and His FINISHED creative and FINISHED redemptive work. Christ is our rest!
Genesis 2:2-3 | Holy Day. Work Completed.
Exodus 16:23 | “A holy Sabbath to the Lord”. Exodus 16:29 | “The Lord has given you the Sabbath”. The Sabbath is a gift dependent on God’s provision. So was the Garden, a gift.
Exodus 20:8-10 | “Remember the Sabbath” based on Creation.
Exodus 31:12-18 | Death penalty for violation of the sabbath. God was “refreshed” or “Caught his breath” on the 7th day. It is a SIGN between God and Israel forever! 2 Chronicals 36:21 notes Jeremiahs prophesy of the 70 years. The Land got its sabbaths.
Leviticus 23:25 | Holy Convocation. Day of Atonement was on a Sabbath. See also Leviticus 16.
Leviticus 24:8 “an everlasting covenant”.
Deuteronomy 5:12-15 | Linked with redemption from Egypt. Also note the command to “do all your work” on the 6th days.
Isaiah 58:13–14 NASB95
13 “If because of the sabbath, you turn your foot From doing your own pleasure on My holy day, And call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, And honor it, desisting from your own ways, From seeking your own pleasure And speaking your own word, 14 Then you will take delight in the Lord, And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
Isa 66:23 | “Sabbath to Sabbath” all man shall come to worship God.
Mt 12:1-21 | “The Son of Man” is “Lord of the Sabbath”. Also defends his apostles as priest who are doing the Lord’s work. Also says “I desire mercy and not sacrifice”. Do good to others on the Sabbath. Love others (thus loving God) is more important than religious ritual. The Heart of the Law.
Mark 2:23-3:6 | “The sabbath was made for man and not man for the sabbath.” It was a gift to man. But more than that it should not be a burden. And more than that it should be used to not be a burden to others. So serve your fellow man on the Sabbath.
Gospels and Acts | Jesus taught and healed on the sabbath as was his custom. Paul preached in the synagogue on the Sabbaths. Jesus’ body lay in the grave on a sabbath.
Luke 13:10-17 | “Daughter of Abraham” was released from the bondage of Satan on the sabbath. You release your donkey for water how much more should this woman be released from the devil.
Luke 14:1-6 | Jesus heals a man with dropsy on the sabbath who has been staged in front of him at a Pharisees house.
John 5:17 | “My Father is working until now and I myself am working.” After being confronted for healing a cripple man on the sabbath and telling him to pick up his pallet and walk.
John 7:21-24 | Circumize on the sabbath so why not heal.
John 7:37–39 NASB95
37 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ” 39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
John 9 | Man born blind healed on the Sabbath.
Colossians 2:16–17 NASB95
16 Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day— 17 things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.
Hebrews 3:11 “they shall not enter my rest”. Referencing the promised land and the disobedient generation.
Hebrews 3 and 4 | Entering “God’s Rest”. Resting from our dead works and trusting in the finished Work of Christ.
Revelation 14:11–13 NASB95
11 “And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.” 12 Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus. 13 And I heard a voice from heaven, saying, “Write, ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on!’ ” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “so that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow with them.”
Revelation 14:13 NASB95
13 And I heard a voice from heaven, saying, “Write, ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on!’ ” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “so that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow with them.”
Matthew 11:25–30 NASB95
25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. 26 “Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. 27 “All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Romans 14:5 NASB95
5 One person regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind.
The Church gathers… the church in Christs, heals, removes burdens, bears burdens,
