Psalm 82
Psalm 82
Is this passage speaking about “gods” or human rulers?
God stands in the congregation of the mighty;
He judges among the gods.
I said, “You are gods,
And all of you are children of the Most High.
Jesus quotes Psalm 82:6
Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods” ’? If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?
Jesus seems to clearly indicate that the ones called “gods” are the ones who recieved the word of God. JEsus says that if they are “gods” then what is wrong with Jesus calling Himself the “son of God” or from Psalm 82:6, “son of the most high”.
The Hebrew word is used for humans;
then his master shall bring him to the judges. He shall also bring him to the door, or to the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him forever.
If the thief is not found, then the master of the house shall be brought to the judges to see whether he has put his hand into his neighbor’s goods.
“For any kind of trespass, whether it concerns an ox, a donkey, a sheep, or clothing, or for any kind of lost thing which another claims to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whomever the judges condemn shall pay double to his neighbor.

When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice. And the woman spoke to Saul, saying, “Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!”
And the king said to her, “Do not be afraid. What did you see?”
And the woman said to Saul, “I saw a spirit ascending out of the earth.”
Angelic beings seem to be refered to in Psalm 89
And the heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord;
Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the saints.
For who in the heavens can be compared to the Lord?
Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened to the Lord?
God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints,
And to be held in reverence by all those around Him.
O Lord, the heavens praise your amazing deeds,
as well as your faithfulness in the angelic assembly.
For who in the skies can compare to the Lord?
Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings,
a God who is honored in the great angelic assembly,
and more awesome than all who surround him?
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?”
So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”
The Hebrew ‘elohim is used for;
God
angels (elect and fallen)
gods of the nations?
people (dead [1 Sam 28:13] or alive)
They sacrificed to demons, not to God,
To gods they did not know,
To new gods, new arrivals
That your fathers did not fear.
Only others use of this word for demon;
They even sacrificed their sons
And their daughters to demons,
This is referenced by Paul in the context of idolatry and fellowship with demons
Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything? Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons. Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
The bible talks about “gods” but there is only One God YHWH. ‘elohim is used for things not YHWH
So the Lord alone led him,
And there was no foreign god with him.
The “him” here is Israel/Jacob.
They sacrificed to demons, not to God,
To gods they did not know,
To new gods, new arrivals
That your fathers did not fear.
This is not saying there are no other ‘elohim but none like Him. Its a comparative statement
And He will stretch out His hand against the north,
Destroy Assyria,
And make Nineveh a desolation,
As dry as the wilderness.
This is the rejoicing city
That dwelt securely,
That said in her heart,
“I am it, and there is none besides me.”
How has she become a desolation,
A place for beasts to lie down!
Everyone who passes by her
Shall hiss and shake his fist.
None like me is not a statement of non existance. They are claiming to be the best or superior.
He makes a curious suggestion in Matt 16:18 that it should be translated the Gates of hell will be overpowered by it, “not able to withsand it”. The church and not hell are the agressor
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
