This weekend I had the opportunity to go fishing with a man that knows his way around the lake. You may know him, he might be the tallest brother at our church in that of Mike Dailey. If I looked at his hospitality through the lens of fishing, his spirit of service exuded even on that boat. I saw him helping people mend fishing rods, giving tips, mainly me on how to catch fish.
All while doing this, he still walked off the boat with more fish than many of the people on the boat. Discipleship is very similar. Jesus and even the apostles, “fishers of men” were able to be successful, yet taking time to help others around them.
The letter to the Galatian church from Paul implores us to help others, meanwhile taking care of your duties. Brother Dailey did not come to teach me, but because I was with him as well as others the spirit that was already in him expanded.
Helping others does not mean you abandon your responsibilities. God is a resourceful God, and if God has given you the lane to help someone he’s also given you the ability to protect your self and not abandon your own responsibility.
This chapter begins with “brethren, if a man is overtaken in a any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.
