Introduction

The book of Joshua begins with the changing of the guards. At the end of Deuteronomy, Moses, the lawgiver died. Moses is the one who is attributed the writings of the Pentatuch. The relationship between Moses and God had grown from the enslavement of the Israelites, to their Exodus and their walking in the wilderness. Moses’ assistant, Joshua is designated to take the position.
When we observe the graduation of our graduates, we see a similiar view with Joshua as our graduates are prepared to step into a new role in their life.
Joshua 1:1 KJV 1900
Now after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord it came to pass, that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,
Joshua means The Lord saves
The description of the next generation is described as the Joshua generation
Joshua is the son of Nun
Joshua was a son
This means that someone brought him to the scene
We didn’t bring ourselves here; God used somebody to bring us here
Nun is not someone who did great works that was recorded in the book
Your destiny is not determined on your origin
Joshua was Moses’ minister
That meant Joshua is a servant
Being a servant to someone greater than you helps you in your growth
From his service, Joshua hears from the Lord
The Lord speaks when you are working
Moses when He is a shepherd
Joshua 1:2 KJV 1900
Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.
Moses represents the former move. His death only means that the particular is off the scene but the plan of God is still in operation. The end of the 1st quarter is not the end of the game

Arise

Stand up

Go Over

Pass over/Cross over/Travel through
Jordan is what we all have that we must cross over.
The blessing of going over; is that God will give you what you need
Joshua 1:3–4 KJV 1900
Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.
Not only will God give you what you need but no one can hinder you
Joshua 1:5 KJV 1900
There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Be Strong & Courageous

We have to be strong to receive what God has for you
One who is strong is able to receive
Strong faith - Strong mind - Strong work ethic - Proverbs speaks of strength displayed in adversity
Courage is the ability to be fearless - Paul told Timothy that God has not given us a spirit of fear
Courage allows us to not be like the world but be like who God made us to be
Courage helps us to stay. The Lord instructed Joshua not to turn from right or left
There will be things in your life to distract you but be strong and courageous
So what helps us stay strong and courageous
Joshua 1:8–9 KJV 1900
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Civilla Martin was a schoolteacher. She and her husband Walter wrote hymns together
One day her husband had to go preach but Civilla had gotten very sick and couldn’t go
Her husband considered to cancel the engagement - in order to take of his wife
But the son told his father - Father, don’t you think that if God wants you to preach today, that he’ll take care of mother while you’re away?
When she heard her son - said those words - Civilla began to write words to a song
When the father got home - she gave him the words - and he began to write music to the words
Be not dismayed, what er be tide - God will take care of you
Beneath his wings of love abide - God will take care of you
God will Take care of you - through everyday - along the way
He will - take care of you
God will take care of you
