Tell the Story (Matt. 14:13-21; Mark 6:32-44; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-15)
Jesus the King of Kings, Has a great following. And He wants to get away, so still preaching and teaching around the Sea of Galilee they get in a boat (Matt, Mark, John) and sail to the area around Bethsaida which is on the northern side of the lake around where the Jordan flows into the Sea (Luke). And Jesus tries to be alone but the crowds follow Him (Matt, Mark, Luke, John)
Even though the Passover is coming (John)
We have discussed Passover before, it is a time of celebration. God freeing the people from Slavery of Egypt. It is the most important moment in OT. It is a time that takes preparation and work, and these people are following Jesus
Which from a Jewish perspective they should have been preparing for a special holiday to God
From a Christian perspective they did the right thing.
Even though he is tired and he really wants some quiet to have Passover.
Jesus has compassion on them, and begins to teach and to heal (Matt, Mark, Luke)
As the day grows late the Disciples come and start talking to Jesus Telling Him it’s time to send the people away and let them go get some food and rest, but Jesus says “you provide for them” (Matt, Mark, Luke)
This is us sometimes. We see a need but instead of doing something about it (could be big or small) we often just say go somewhere else. I won’t tell you about Jesus, go to church; I won’t teach you, go to class; I won’t help you, find someone else. (won’t help is different than can’t help)
Jesus often reply to us the same as he did to them, it’s your job. With His guidance and help. You can do amazing things.
Jesus looks at Phillip (John)
We don’t know a lot about Phillip. He is from the area of Bethsaida along with Andrew and Peter, The area they are now preaching in
He is always listed 5th among the apostles (Matt 10, Mark 3, Luke 6, Acts 1) even though he was one of the few that Jesus went and got, no one brought Philip to Jesus (John 1:43)
Here we see him as a practical man. He will eventually be martyred in eastern Turkey where he went to preach.
Jesus looks at Philip then ask “How are we going to buy bread for some many people” (John)
Phillip responds (John), “Two hundred Denari would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little” (Mark, John)
Andrew also from the area brings up a lad (John). Andrew might have known the family. And says here is a lad with 5 loves and two fish (Matt, Mark, Luke John). This boy offers all he has.
And what does Jesus (God) Do with it. He blesses it and gives it out (just like He will when he breaks bread at last supper) And everyone is satisfied.
How God does this miracle is beyond me. Multiplying food. Everyone started reaching into their pockets and sharing their candy bars. I have no Idea.
But God provides and does a great thing when we Give him our all (This is more than just a financial Statement)
This boy is something to be admired. All his food that he brought apparently most people didn’t think ahead. And yet he is willing to give it all up to Jesus
We often like to compartmentalize our lives.
Jesus, I will give you everything except Finances (rich or poor), Job, School, Religion (I don’t need to do what the Bible says because God understands). Is there an area that you have been holding back from God
As I speak of giving it all to God, I need to give a warning about not giving it all to man. Man will suck you dry and leave you with nothing, even in the name of the church. Look at Jesus as he tried to get away and recharge. That is where boundaries come in. Learning to say no.
Rule of exclusion. Every time you say yes you are saying no to everything else you could be doing with that time, that money, that resource
So prayerfully evaluate what is the best use of that resource But boundaries are not to wall you in, So that you do nothing. We can’t hide behind the idea of boundaries. If you struggle with boundary issues I recommend Boundaries by Cloud and Townsend
When to say yes and how to say no
Man will dry you up and burn you out
But God will multiply
God takes your all and will do wonderful things with it. Not prosperity Gospel I am not promising a ten fold return on your finances. I am saying that when we give God our all he changes lives Ours And the lives around us, And around the world

Next Steps

Are you holding an area back
