Be Still
Be Still
“Stop fighting” is what he commands. The Hebrew verb means to cease, be inactive. “Surrender!”; “Stop”; “Desist!”; “Drop your weapons!” and “Make peace”.
Be still … is a rebuke to a restless and turbulent world: ‘Quiet!’ It resembles the command to another raging sea with Jesus and the disciples: ‘Peace! Be still!’ The end in view is not of man’s hopes, but of God’s glory. Stop oppose Me and vexing My people says the Lord I am over all for their safety.”
Be still To what purpose? - And see that I am God! RELAX, the present reality of a sovereign God enables rest. Do nothing/be quiet (see 1 Sam 15:16) and know.”
Knows that God has only to speak and all opposition is gone. Learn to “let it be” and see God exalted.
Now God Himself command the heathen troubler makers of His people to “Be still,”—i. e., Desist from your mad attempt to fight against the Omnipotence God on the side of his people.
The Lord is in absolute control of all warfare as well as peace among all nations. “The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress,” and is international in scope.
He commands that their uproar be silenced and that they all recognize that he is God.
Know That I Am God
Know That I Am God
Know is used in the sense to acknowledge, recognize, admit and confess. Know that I am God can sometimes be translated “learn that I am God” or “see that I am God.”
God Himself calls for his people to trust in Him and know that He is God,.
What immediate evidence is that he “is with us,” our fortress? A recent victory or victories so unexpected it requires divine intervention to explain it. Hezekiah’s deliverance from Sennacherib comes readily to mind (2 Kings 18–19).
Be still, and know that I am God. His miraculous interposition for His people proves that Jehovah of Israel is Elohim,—i. e., God.
I Will Be Exalted
I Will Be Exalted
I am exalted means “I rule”, “I am above” and “I dominate”. He wants it expressed, spoken -- “The nations praise me, the people of the world say that I am great.”
Verse 9 says Wars Cease. Just as Yahweh functions as the divine warrior to aid the Israelites in battle As Isaiah 2:4 notes, God will settle all disputes between nations, and “they will beat their . . . spears into pruning hooks.” Similarly, Ezekiel states that one of the means Yahweh will use to insure that “the nations know that I am the Lord” will be to create an age when weapons of war can be used for fuel (Ezek 39:7–9).
His firm intention ‘I will be exalted’ is enough to arouse the resentment of the proud, but the longing and resolve of the humble: ‘Be exalted, O God, above the heavens’ (57:11). It also renews their confidence and increases their faith. It comes back with added force, God is ‘with us’, One so exalted is ‘our high stronghold’.
For He will be exalted throughout the earth. It’s to saints of all ages, the call for a silent trust in God’s saving power, in anticipation of universal peace. This is the source of our comfort and strength. This is his exalted position as king (Pss 18:46; 99:2; 113:4; 138:6) and his self-revelation as king through his mighty deeds of deliverance (Pss 21:13; 57:5, 11).
I will be exalted among the heathen. Jehovah’s words here correspond to Hezekiah’s prayer (Isa. 37:20). The result in Hezekiah’s time accordingly was (2 Chr. 32:23) “Many brought gifts unto the Lord to Jerusalem, and presents to Hezekiah king of Judah; so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations. God gets the Glory period, point blank, the end.
Key Words
Key Words
Earth - Place where people, animals, and plants exist. The planet on which we live; the world.
Exalted - An increase in rank or importance. Placed at a high or powerful level; held in high regard.
God - In Christianity and other monotheistic religions, the creator and ruler of the universe and source of all moral authority; the supreme being. Can God be defined? If a definition consists of “a word or phrase expressing the essential nature of a person or thing,” then God cannot be defined, for no word or even phrase could express His essential nature. No one could put together such a definition of God.
But if the definition were descriptive, then it is possible to define God, though not exhaustively. Indeed, most definitions are descriptive. One of the most famous, that in the Westminster Shorter Catechism, illustrates this kind of definition when it describes God as “Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in His being, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth” (Question 4). The longer description in the Westminster Confession of Faith simply adds more attributes like love, mercy, and freedom. Thus those definitions simply list some of the attributes of God.
Attributes are qualities that are inherent to a subject. They identify, distinguish, or analyze the subject. Most theologies entitle this chapter “The Attributes of God.” I prefer “Perfections”God is a spiritual essence, intelligent, eternal, true, good, pure, just, merciful, most free and of infinite power and wisdom.” Thomasius more briefly defines God as “the absolute personality.” These definitions take no account of the existence of lower religions and ideas of God, nor do they convey much of the concreteness and nearness of God revealed in Christ. A similar recent definition, put forward, however, avowedly of the Christian conception, is that of Professor W. N, Clarke: “God is the personal Spirit, perfectly good, who in holy love creates, sustains and orders all” (Outline of Christian Theology, 66). The rise of comparative religion has shown that “while all religions involve a conscious relation to a being called God, the Divine Being is in different religions conceived in the most different ways; as one and as many, as natural and as spiritual, as like to and manifested in almost every object in the heavens above or earth beneath, in mountains and trees, in animals.
Heathen - A Gentile, a pagan, lawless people, the wicked and the antichrist. a person who does not belong to a widely held religion (especially one who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim) as regarded by those who do.
Know - Be aware of through observation, inquiry, or information. Having developed a relationship with (someone) through meeting and spending time with them; be familiar or friendly with. We get to Know God through Answered Prayer, through God Himself, through His Word, through His Works.
Still - not moving or making a sound, motionless, unmoving, without moving, without moving a muscle, immobile, like a statue, as if turned to stone, stationary, at rest, at a standstill, lifeless, a deep silence and calm; stillness.
