Col. Week 2
Week 2: Walking ABSOLUTLEY in a RELATIVE world.
Colossians 1:9-11
The way we walk can be very telling. If we walk with a limp more than likely we are injured. If we walk fast we are generally in a hurry to get somewhere. If we start skipping around it either means we are happy or just a little strange! As we continue on in our study of Colossians we see that Paul and Timothy are praying for these believers so that their walk will be worthy of Christ.
We live in the information age and thus we are not lacking it. However, information is different than knowledge. Paul and Timothy are asking that these believers be filled with the knowledge of God’s will (1:9). He wants them to be completely certain of truth of this knowledge namely God’s will concerning the way they conduct their everyday lives.
Paul also requests that this knowledge be accompanied by spiritual wisdom and understanding. In other words he wants God to help them understand and organize the truths of God’s word and live them out practically in everyday life! Practically this mean for us as Christians that we need to know God’s word and live it out, even in the small stuff. Our society has a sneaky way making certain things not look like a big deal. However, God’s word is the ABSOLUTE moral standard we are to live by.
Take for example Pirated media like music or movies. Now there is a good chance that maybe even you have a CD that a friend made for you or maybe you have made a CD for a friend. According to the American Recoding Industry that is illegal use of media. Think about the reasoning or motivation you used to take or make that CD. Was it supported by Biblical truth?
Satan in all his craftiness promotes things like “situational ethics.” That means that we should make our choices based on the situation and not God’s word. There is another prevalent idea in society that says that truth is relative. Both of these idea’s run contradictory to God’s word. We as Christians need to be careful not fall prey to them. Thus Paul and Timothy’s prayer is beneficial for us today.
"For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy;" (Colossians 1:9-11, NKJV)
