It's Not What I Expected

The followers of Christ were brokenhearted at the cruel treatment of their Savior and His crucifixion.
This was not how it was supposed to go...
Their expectations were dashed
disappointed
disillusioned
Discouraged and even...
dissuaded from the mission
It’s understandable...
These disciples probably handled all of these events better than any of us would have been able to respond.
But I want to look at the love and affection that Mary had for her Savior and how it effected her actions.
Love always impacts actions...
When Mary went to sepulcher, she knew what she was going to find… but she didn’t...
The situation
the scenerio
the scene was completely different...

It's Not What I Expected

The road of life has many turns in it...
Sometimes, we can anticipate exactly what tomorrow will look like, and our anticipations and expectations are correct...
But other days, what we expect and what we get are light years apart...
I imagine that this is the situation with our text tonight...
Mary Magdalene - a dedicated follower of our Savior… a hero of the faith… one who stood when others sat… One who soared while others stalled...

It's Not What I Expected

She Sought
John 20:1 KJV 1900
1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
before daylight, she was seeking the Lord
Sleeplessness
burdened from the events earlier in the week
Seeking the Lord will not be on accident -
It’s on purpose.
She Stayed
John 20:11 KJV 1900
11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
“But Mary stood...”
She stayed...
John 20:10 KJV 1900
10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.
John 20:2–4 KJV 1900
2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him. 3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre. 4 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.
Peter left
John left
It’s easy to point out someone else
It’s easy to name someone else -
John left himself unknown, unnamed… vague...
Mary stood - she stayed...
Eternity will reveal that some of the greatest christians to ever live
never preached a message - as Peter did on Pentecost
never pastored a church
never taught a class
never had great possessions or attainments...
These saints - like Mary - loved their Savior and not only spoke of their love - but lived that love day in and day out
She Sought
She Stayed
She Sorrowed
John 20:11 KJV 1900
11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
She wept...
She sorrowed
She was moved to tears -
Sense of loss
Sense of injury
Overwhelming sense of injustice...
Unbelievable sense of insecurity
the Savior was gone
He had died
The crown and the crowd won...
the Cross and the crucifixion were harsh realities
Death was a harsh reality
She Sought
She Stayed
She Sorrowed
She Stooped
John 20:11 KJV 1900
11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
Humility
She was going to go where Jesus had been -
She was willing to minimize, lower her standing
She was willing to make herself unclean
She was willing to go to where the dead were...
This lady had a love for the Savior!
This lady was genuine
This was a dedicated christian -
Prided keeps many from getting too close to the Lord.
She Sought
She Stayed
She Sorrowed
She Stooped
She Saw
Angels
John 20:12–13 KJV 1900
12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
Savior
John 20:14–17 KJV 1900
14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. 16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. 17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
