God’s judgment and wrath against sin are very real.

Matthew 24:37–39 ESV
37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
God’s punishment against sin is very startling, and God meant for it to be.

The flood is meant to show us the seriousness of our sin against a just and holy God.

We deserve God’s just punishment for OUR sin.
Do we really believe that?
Although the effects of sin are physical, sin itself is a spiritual problem. The problem is that we have rebelled against God.
Coronavirus and Christ Chapter 6 Picturing Moral Horror

God put the physical world under a curse so that the physical horrors we see around us in diseases and calamities would become a vivid picture of how horrible sin is. In other words, physical evil is a parable, a drama, a signpost pointing to the moral outrage of rebellion against God.

God’s mercy and compassion are also on full display in the flood account.

Noah and his family did not deserve to be saved during the flood.
Genesis 6:9 ESV
9 These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.
Throughout the Old Testament we see God continuing to preserve a remnant through His grace and mercy.
We see types of the coming Messiah who despite their many faults God uses to preserve and save this remnant.

It isn’t until Christ that we see the fulfillment of God’s plan of salvation in preserving and saving this remnant.

2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Only Christ transforms the heart, and through the power of His Spirit enables us to overcome the sin that is so ingrained in our souls.

Christ is our only hope of true repentance. In Him alone we see the true horror of our sin, and yet we are not left to wallow in our own shame. We have the hope of new life through faith in Him. He becomes the source of our strength to overcome sin. Through Christ we receive a new birth into freedom from sin.
