Intro

Christ shed his blood to save us from our sins.

The shedding of Christ’s own blood is foundational to our salvation. It is the very means by which you and I are saved from our sins.
And that’s because the blood of Christ really does three things that make it possible for wicked sinners to be reconciled to a Holy God and draw near to him. And these three things are laid out in Hebrews 9:15-28.
First, Christ shed his blood pay the debt that we owe God for our sin.
Second, he shed his blood to cleanse us from our guilt by taking our sin away.
And third, Christ shed his blood to deliver us from the judgement we all deserve for sinning against God.
A Christian is someone who is covered in the blood of the Lamb, and his blood is the only thing that saves us from our sins.
Let’s start with point number 1...

I. The Blood of Christ Pays for Our Sins

Hebrews 9:15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.
When the Author says Therefore, that is a reference back to Hebrews 9:12.
In that verse we are told that Jesus atoned for our sins permanently by offering his own blood as a sacrifice.
And so because of that, therefore, Christ is the mediator of the New Covenant.
The New Covenant is the covenant of grace. It is God’s promise to forgive our sins once and for all, and to free us from our slavery to sin by putting his Holy Spirit within us to give us new hearts that love God more than our sin.
So when the Author calls Christ the mediator of the New Covenant, he is saying that only through Christ’s sacrifice can we be saved and forgiven of our sins.
