Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome

John 8:34–36 AMP
34 Jesus answered them, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, Whoever commits and practices sin is the slave of sin. 35 Now a slave does not remain in a household permanently (forever); the son [of the house] does remain forever. 36 So if the Son liberates you [makes you free men], then you are really and unquestionably free.
Numbers 12:1–15 AMP
1 NOW MIRIAM and Aaron talked against Moses [their brother] because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite woman. 2 And they said, Has the Lord indeed spoken only by Moses? Has He not spoken also by us? And the Lord heard it. 3 Now the man Moses was very meek (gentle, kind, and humble) or above all the men on the face of the earth. 4 Suddenly the Lord said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, Come out, you three, to the Tent of Meeting. And the three of them came out. 5 The Lord came down in a pillar of cloud, and stood at the Tent door and called Aaron and Miriam, and they came forward. 6 And He said, Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make Myself known to him in a vision and speak to him in a dream. 7 But not so with My servant Moses; he is entrusted and faithful in all My house. 8 With him I speak mouth to mouth [directly], clearly and not in dark speeches; and he beholds the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against My servant Moses? 9 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them, and He departed. 10 And when the cloud departed from over the Tent, behold, Miriam was leprous, as white as snow. And Aaron looked at Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous! 11 And Aaron said to Moses, Oh, my lord, I plead with you, lay not the sin upon us in which we have done foolishly and in which we have sinned. 12 Let her not be as one dead, already half decomposed when he comes out of his mother’s womb. 13 And Moses cried to the Lord, saying, Heal her now, O God, I beseech You! 14 And the Lord said to Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed for seven days? Let her be shut up outside the camp for seven days, and after that let her be brought in again. 15 So Miriam was shut up without the camp for seven days, and the people did not journey on until Miriam was brought in again.

Post Traumatic Slave Syndrom

Dr. Joy DeGruy
A swedish biological scientist of the 18th Century Carl (or Carlus) Linnaeus ( 1707-78) He laid the groundwork for the taxonomic system we use today to classify all plants and animals.
Thanks to Linnaeus, we can know the place of each kind of plant and animal we find on earth.
The problem was he went too far. He expanded his system to try to account for different types of humans. Linnaeus began the science of anthropology and laid the foundation for 19th Century beliefs about race that resulted in racism.
He used skin color as a criterion for classifying races, while also assigning moral and intellectual capacities to each race. Theses concepts became a permanent part of 19th Century anthropological thought and language.
According to Haller, In His book Outcast from Evolution, Linnaeus describes
Homo Americanus as reddish, choleric, obstinate, contended, and regulated by custom
Homo Europaus as white, fickle, sanguine, blue eyed, gentle and governed by laws
Homo Asiaticus as sallow, grave dignified, avaricious, and ruled by opinion;
Homo Afer as black, phlegmatic, cunning, lazy, lustful, careless, and governed by caprice
Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome Defined:
Is a condition that exists when a population has experienced multigenerational trauma resulting from Centuries of slavery and continues to experience oppression and institutionalized racism today. Added to this condition is the belief (real or imagined) that the benefits of the society in which they live are not accessible to them. This then, is Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome
A syndrome is a pattern of behaviors that is brought about by specific circumstances. The circumstances that produce PTSS are Multi-generational trauma and continued oppression , plus a real image of lack of access.
What is the resulting pattern of behavior? Theres not a single pattern of behavior. There are many. Lets identify 3
1. Vacant Esteem
: Esteem has to do with worth & value, Self-esteem is the judgment we make concerning our own worth
Vacant esteem is the state of believing oneself to have little or no worth. it is the net result os three spheres of influence society, community, and family.
Society influences us through its institutions, laws, policies and media
The communities in which we live influence us through establishing norms and encouraging conformity to society at large
Our families influence us through the ways in which we are raised and groomed to take our place, as our parents see it, in the community and society
2. Ever-Present Anger
“Anger is the normal emotional response to a blocked goal.”
Often, if a persons goal remains blocked overtime, they will begin to consider the possibility of failure and so experience fear, and when we are fearful we also lash out in anger
3. Racist Socializtion
One of the most insidious and pervasive symptoms of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome is our adoption of the the slave masters value system.
At this value systems foundation is the belief that white and all things associated with whiteness are superior; and that black and all things associated with blackness are inferior.
Through the centuries of slavery and the decades of institutionalized oppression that followed, many African Americans have, in essence been socialized to be something akin to white racists. Many of us have adopted the attitudes and views of a white racists America.
Many of us see ourselves, and our community through a white lens. We both mold ourselves to accommodate white prejudices and endeavor to adopt to their standards.
MANY African Americans have adopted white standards, including beauty and material success, as well as violence and brutality.
It easier to find large amounts of black families following white pastors , than large amounts of white families following black pastors.
We have segregated ourselves with the grade of hair, color of our eyes and Light skinned (red bone) vs. dark skinned nappy hair side of the family.
Let’s not mention the intellectual folks are told they talk like their White and the not so intellectuals talk like they are from the ghetto..
This is where we must look at this text......
Numbers 12:1–2 NKJV
1 Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married; for he had married an Ethiopian woman. 2 So they said, “Has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us also?” And the Lord heard it.
Miriam & Aaron are the classic jezebel & Ahab scenario.
i. They spoke against Moses because he had a black wife.
And Miriam had more of a problem with than Aaron, But she knew his spineless behind will follow along with what she was attempting to do.
Change the direction of leadership because she was racist.
Do you know how many sisters & brothers are in the world that didn’t like the choice their sibling made in choosing his or her spouse? because of the color of their skin
ii. Since her issue was with the nubian sista, shoe could’t just come out with that and be honest because that would sound racist.
iii. So she challenged his Leadership Abilities..
So when people have issues with you that can’t acknowledge because they know how it will make them look.
The invent something else to come at you with..
2. The problem i have with Miriam & Aaron is they where unaware how great of a blessing Zipporah had been to Moses from day one of his ministry.
Proverbs 18:22 AV
22 Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.
Mose’s hit the jackpot with her & her father Jethro.. God used Jethro to become Mose mentor and help him navigate how to be a productive administrator.
But Zipporah save Mose’s life.
Exodus 4:20–26 NLT
20 So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey, and headed back to the land of Egypt. In his hand he carried the staff of God. 21 And the Lord told Moses, “When you arrive back in Egypt, go to Pharaoh and perform all the miracles I have empowered you to do. But I will harden his heart so he will refuse to let the people go. 22 Then you will tell him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Israel is my firstborn son. 23 I commanded you, “Let my son go, so he can worship me.” But since you have refused, I will now kill your firstborn son!’ ” 24 On the way to Egypt, at a place where Moses and his family had stopped for the night, the Lord confronted him and was about to kill him. 25 But Moses’ wife, Zipporah, took a flint knife and circumcised her son. She touched his feet with the foreskin and said, “Now you are a bridegroom of blood to me.” 26 (When she said “a bridegroom of blood,” she was referring to the circumcision.) After that, the Lord left him alone.
3. And the Lord Heard it!!!!!
Miriam & Aaron really didn’t think this thing thru because the moment they began to bad mouth Moses
“He Heard It”
Numbers 12:4 AMP
4 Suddenly the Lord said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, Come out, you three, to the Tent of Meeting. And the three of them came out.
Numbers 12:5–6 AMP
5 The Lord came down in a pillar of cloud, and stood at the Tent door and called Aaron and Miriam, and they came forward. 6 And He said, Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make Myself known to him in a vision and speak to him in a dream.
Numbers 12:7–8 AMP
7 But not so with My servant Moses; he is entrusted and faithful in all My house. 8 With him I speak mouth to mouth [directly], clearly and not in dark speeches; and he beholds the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against My servant Moses?
Numbers 12:9–10 AMP
9 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them, and He departed. 10 And when the cloud departed from over the Tent, behold, Miriam was leprous, as white as snow. And Aaron looked at Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous!
Now Wait Miriam hadn issue with Zipporah’s beautiful black skin and God turns Miriam’s skin to Leprous white.
I. Next point this is how we know she instigated this whole thing she was the only one made a leper
II. they had to got to the same person they where attempting to tare down to help build them back up..
Numbers 12:3 AMP
3 Now the man Moses was very meek (gentle, kind, and humble) or above all the men on the face of the earth.
Moses heard every word but did’t feel obligated to defend himself..
He stood still and Let the Lord fight his battle.
Numbers 12:13 AMP
13 And Moses cried to the Lord, saying, Heal her now, O God, I beseech You!
Numbers 12:15 AMP
15 So Miriam was shut up without the camp for seven days, and the people did not journey on until Miriam was brought in again.
The worse person to rise up against is the person that has the power to intercede for you…
