Galatians 5:1 NKJV
Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

Introduction: Independence and the American spirit.

“Come and take it.”
Independence is an integral part of the American spirit. And although independence, like any virtue, can be taken too far and turned into a vice -- eg, disobedient spirit, rebellion -- there are times when an independent spirit honors God.
CAUTION: we must never have a spirit independent from God! And we should not so value independence that we wander away from the Church.
However, there are times when God honors independence of mind

Two Imperatives are Counter-intuitive, because we learn early in life that submission is godly.

Review texts that extol the virtue of obedience and submission.
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord” (Eph 6:1).
“Wives, submit to your husbands” (Col 3:18).
“Submit yourselves therefore to God” (James 4:7).
The key is in “to whom” we are called to submit.
Submission to God is good.
Submission to one another (believers) is good (Eph 5:21).

So why is the submission in Galatians 5:1 sinful?

To submit in this context would be a sin.
Enecho means “to hold fast,” but this is passive. Meaning is to be held captive.”
Who was trying to hold the Galatians captive? And for what purpose?
As it turns out, Jews were trying to hold them captive to the idea that salvation was impossible unless you were first converted to the Law of Moses.
Ie, Jesus isn’t enough. You have to be circumcised first. You have to venerate Moses first. You have to obey the Ten Commandments first.
That’s because to submit would be to obscure or distort the gospel.

Satan’s attacks don’t change very much.

He still wants to confuse people about the gospel by insisting that Jesus is not enough. There’s always one more thing you must believe or do.

Let’s talk about some current issues that obscure and distort the gospel.

Against these you must stand and refuse to submit!
Sexual confusion (Jonathan Merritt’s video)
Black Lives Matter / White Fragility
Coronavirus tyranny in the church.

What must you do when you are told that Jesus demands something when He doesn’t?

Stand
Do not submit
It is your moral duty to resist.
For your sake. For the next generation’s sake.
We are in a fight for the soul of our nation. For the soul of the church in America. Jesus will continue to build His Church, but what faith will He find here when He returns?
We refuse to submit to the thought police.
