The sluggard does not like to be awakened out of his sleep nor thoughtless sinner wish to be roused from his carnality. They chooses to dream on that “all is well” and nothing to panic in this present life even life after death. There are few men so hardened in sin, but they design to attend to the concerns of their souls at some other time or at the convenient time. Many resolve to reform and repent at some future period. For them, the things concerning about their souls are just a waste of time. However, when death knocks at the door, they rush to their breath hoping to enter the gates of heaven.
Hebrews 9:27 say, “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” Man dies and he dies once—only once. There is no second chance. This is the emphasis of “once”. Man has only one chance to be forgiven, saved, and redeemed—only one chance to become acceptable to God and receive the inheritance of the promise, that is, eternal life. Man dies, and when he dies, his opportunity is over. Jesus Christ died in this world and in the time frame of this life. He did not die in some other world nor in the time frame of some other world. He died upon earth as a Man for men. Therefore, there will never again be a chance to be covered by His sacrifice other than in this world and in this life. Men die and they die only once, never again to live upon the earth.
Man dies and then comes the judgment. He has sinned and cursed God, ignored and neglected God, rebelled against and rejected God. This is the tragedy of tragedies. We just live like we want—go our own way and do our own thing—instead of living like God says. We are short of what we should be and ever so imperfect. We are guilty of transgressing the Word and Law of God; therefore, we must bear the judgment of God.
Death is inevitable but life in Christ is eternally rewarding in heaven. The opportunity to prepare our lives for eternity with God is today and not tomorrow. So be saved today, as what 2 Pe. 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”
