Jesus meets two men with some questions.
Jesus meets two men with some questions.
18 Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. 19 And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?”
20 When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ” 21 And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.
22 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them. 23 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”
Intro: JTB is in prison, he sends two of his disciples to ask Jesus if He is the one (the long awaited Messiah) The one the Jew taught was coming to bring freedom from the Romans. The one who would set up His kingdom and rule as a King.
Lets go over who JTB was. Luke 1:5-25 H.W His dad Zacharias was a priest. His mother (cousin of Mary) Elizabeth. She was up in age, and was barren. He was doing his priestly duties “an angel of the Lord” appeared and tells him and his wife will have a son and His name will be John.
Luke 1:13-17. He is not able to speak until John is born.
JTB call was to prepare the way for the coming of the Messiah. Elab He lived in the wilderness and the way he dressed and what he ate.
a. He baptised.
3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins,
b. He spoke of the coming of “one mightier then him” Elab
c. He told about Jesus, “Behold the lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world”
d. He baptises Jesus, but not without some Resistance from John (I’m not worthy)But He does not for the remission of sins. Picture of His death burial, and resurrection.
e. When Jesus starts His earthly ministry, JTB says
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
1. JTB preaching was bold he didn’t hold back.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
a. He spoke against Herod for taking his brothers wife and was thrown into prison. And this where we come to this part of the gospel, where he sends two of his disciples (elab what there were)
18 Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. 19 And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?”
1. John had already known Jesus, already pointed to Jesus, already baptized Jesus. He was exited about the coming of Jesus. (He leaped for joy in his mother womb)
He had affirmed that he believed in Christ, but there were certain things that caused him to doubt. (We as followers of Jesus, believe, but still at times may have doubt, have sme questions) (The devil puts these doubts in your head)
a. What causes us to doubt? When are expectations are not met. We expect God to answers our prayers a certain way. Or expect God to do things a certain way. And when it doesn’t happen the way we expect it will cause us to doubt.
b. Elab what the Jews were expecting from their Messiah. This could be way John was wondering about this.
c So he sends these two to say, “Is this the Messiah, or are we looking for someone else?” It reflects his perplexity and his doubt, even though he had affirmed his belief and had known about Christ.
d. They JTB disciples had been keeping up with what Jesus was doing.
14 Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”
2. This was just after Jesus had called Matthew. Elab
a. John was in prison and he needed a report on how things were going, so some of his disciples would follow Jesus around. At this particular point, they got involved in the conversation.
b. In Luke 7:11-17 Jesus raising from the dead a young man, the only son of a widow. He touches the casket, and says, “Arise,” and the dead son sat up and began to speak, so He turned him over to his mother. Then fear came upon them all, and they glorified God, and so forth. So He raised the dead, and the rumor went, “Throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.” Then there is this little note in verse 18, “Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things.”
c. Now there were some reasons for him to doubt, so he asks this question. “Are you the one who is coming? The Coming One is a title for the Messiah. The Seed of David, the King of kings, the Prince of Peace, the Coming One. In fact, it is coming one of the most common titles for the Messiah.
d. John has some doubt, and he went right to the source and dealt with it. He sent two his disciples to Jesus. He has some doubt but he still believed, but he had some trouble understanding. (What a great way to deal with doubt or questions) Go straight to the source.
e. We know that God will answer our prayers, we know that all things are possible through Him. But there still may be some doubt that comes from not understanding when things don’t meet our expectations.
f. Here is whatJTB saying, in effect, “Should I continue to believe what I believe, or should I believe something else?” It’s as if he’s saying, “I believe that You’re the Messiah; am I wrong in believing that?”
g. John expected the Messiah to fulfill the promises of the Messiah, he pronounced Jesus as the Messiah, but he was confused. How could he doubt? Even though what he predicted was from God, he didn’t know or understand it all.
h. JTB disciples ask Jesus, are you the one or should we wait for another. (The question comes from John) Jesus doesn’t say Yes,
Go back and tell John Yes I am the coming one) But they saw Jesus do great things.
21 And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.
“And the same hour” At that moment Jesus healed people.
God will do that for us. (Elab looking for a job)
22 Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.
1 Jesus was saying, these are for John, “Go and tell John the things you have seen, and heard”
a. It wasn’t second hand information, it was the power of God. Clearly, those are the credentials of the Messiah
2. Lets look at us, when we may doubt. We know God’s word, we trust and believe God’s word, what causes doubt, what causes a Christian to question God? Why haven’t you done anything yet God? Why are you allowing this to happen? Why do bad things happen to good people and and bad people seem to get all the breaks?
a. Look at who Jesus healed.
Blind: Sometimes we don’t see what God is trying to do, or what He is trying to show us and we doubt.
Lame to walk: If we are not walking right with God, we may doubt. We can’t walk our lives our way.
Lepers were cleansed: Sin in our lives will cause to doubt.
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Deaf to hear: Maybe sometimes we are not listening to God like we should, and will cause us to doubt.
b. All these issue that cause us to doubt, will also cause us to question God, why? Why do you do things the way you do them?
23 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”
Some have called this an added Beatitude, the lost Beatitude.
a Jerry Vines, give a paraphrase. Jesus is telling John “Blessed is that person who does not get upset by the way I run my business, John, you may not understand everything, but I’m on schedule; I,m doing just exactly what I intend to do. Blessed is the person who does not get upset by the way I rub my business”
b. This is great truth for us. We are to trust in God’s word, and trust in Gods way. He ways are not always our ways.
8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.
c. Situations are going to along that we don’t understand, but we still have to trust God.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.
d. You may pray to be healed, and God will heal you. You may pray to be healed and God will not heal you.Or what ever it is that you are praying for. We may not understand, we just have to trust. We have to leave it in God’s hands who knows what He is doing.
e. As Christians, we have to make up our minds that no matter what, we are going to trust God to do what is right. I know He loves me, I know He loves you.
f. So when things are hitting hard, when seems like nothing is going right and you don’t what is going on, or why it is happening,
23 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”
“Blessed is the person who does not get upset by the way God runs His business”
End: Things that have happened in past, things that may be happening now, things that will happen in days to comes. Trust God, don’t let the cause you to give up hope. God will get you through.
