John 1:1–5 NASB95

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

In the Beginning-

Creation- Mimicking the creation account of Gen 1:1

A time prior to creation

Was-

nv- imperfect form of eimi

the imperfect indicates a continuous action occuring in time without regard for its beginning or end.

The beginning indicated plays no role in the duration of this union.

In other words, it’s not the beginning of the Word or its union with God.

The Word, in the beginning, had existence in and of itself, not as a result of the beginning but preexisting the beginning.
