Millennium

Rev 20 - Millennium
Let’s not divide over this
Revelation 20:1–10 ESV
1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. 2 And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, 3 and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while. 4 Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years. 7 And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. 9 And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven and consumed them, 10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Postmillennialism

after a golden age… improved and then Christ
symbolically after the resurrection
exegetical problems
uncommon

Amillennialism

amill = no mill - realized millennium
church is eschatological fulfillment of Israel
1000 symbolic years
nowhere else in scrip do we read this - simplifying the end
OT txts Isa 60 / Eze 40 are not mentioned (premill defense texts) Rev 21-22 they are there…
Rev 19-20 is not a sequence but a retelling of the same event… Eze 38-39 (likewise)
Apocalyptic language - Satan is bound by Jesus (binding of the strong man)
Satan is not deceiving the nations like he used to…
Resurrection two separate terms - Spiritual / Physical
first death / second death = spiritual resurrection / physical resurrection

Premillennialism

Historic / Dispensationalism
Christ comes physically and bodily to reign on earth 1000 yrs
dispensationalism = Israel / church separate
historic = church is fulfillment of Israel
Rev 19-20 a sequence of events
Rev 12 Satan is cast into earth Rev 20 - cast into the pit
Satan is right now god of this world still active
Rev 20 myrters - who died during the tribulation - resurrected and reign with them
physical resurrection

Rapture

Most famous / infamous part of eschatology
Rapture = Latin - Greek = snatch away
Matthew 24:36–42 ESV
36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. 37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. 42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 ESV
16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
1 Corinthians 15:51–52 ESV
51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
Pre-Trib = before the wrath of God in Rev...
Mid-Trib = Goes halfway through and raptured before the worst part of Trib
Prewrath = Somewhere in later half but before the trumpet and bowl judgements
Post-Trib = initial first phase of second coming
Yes Rapture
1 Thes 5.9 - not destined for wrath
No warning about enduring the tribulation
Pre Trib = Rev 3.10
Revelation 3:10 ESV
10 Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth.
No church mentioned in Rev 6-18?
Rapture is inconsequential if happening after the tribulation
No Rapture
1830’s James Nelson Darby - Traditionally not the view…
Yes warning about tribulation…
1 Thes 4 = appears to be a LOUD and final resurrection / glorification of God’s people
Matt 24 = we have the places wrong to who is who = Preservation through the event
1 Cor 15 = is speaking of the LAST trumpet and there would have been more clarity of two separate events
Mark 13 = Jesus appears to not have this view
What should you do with this?
Hope for the rapture of the church, prepare for the tribulation to come.

The End

Revelation 20:11–12 ESV
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.
Revelation 20:15 ESV
15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
Jesus is the way the truth and the life and no-one comes to the father except through him!
