A story of two brave men
A story of two brave men
Yesterday two elderly men were in the media.
Two brave men who have made a dfference in the world.
Two men who have been rewarded on the same day. One man Tom Moore and the other J i Paker.
Tom Moore: Tom decided he would walk around his backyard 100 times before his 110th birthday to raise 1000 pounds for the NHS. He captured the imagination of a nation fighting Covid. After he raised 33 million pounds He was promoted to Captain and yesterday he was knighten by the queen. He recieved a public award, appreciation of his country and his queen, the highest authority in the land.
The other man
James Packer:
Packer was a lifelong Anglican churchman who spent the first half of his life in England and the second half in Canada but who was perhaps most popular in the United States. He is widely recognized as one of the most influential theological popularizers of the twentieth century.
Throughout his nearly 70 years of writing and ministry, he stressed the importance of knowing and praying to and communing with the triune God. He called for the church to take holiness and repentance seriously by walking in the Spirit and fighting against indwelling sin. He defended biblical authority and championed the cause of disciple-making catechesis. And he reintroduced multiple generations to his beloved Puritan forebears, whom he regarded as the Redwoods of the Christian faith.
He saw himself as “a voice that called people back to old paths of truth and wisdom.” His entire life was spent resisting the idea that “the newer is the truer, only what is recent is decent, every shift of ground is a step forward, and every latest word must be hailed as the last word on its subject.”
Though he was willing to address and engage the controversies of his day, he wrote, “I should like to be remembered as one who pointed to the pasturelands.”
In contrast to Tom who was honoured for his service James was to loose his office of reverand after St John’s Vancouver Anglican Church in 2008 left the Anglican church of canada over the issue of same sex blessings he handed in his liscence to the bishop of New Westminster he then joined the Anglican Network of Canada.
Life Can Get Wearisome
Life Can Get Wearisome
1 The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh—an inspired utterance.
This man’s utterance to Ithiel:
“I am weary, God,
but I can prevail.
2 Surely I am only a brute, not a man;
I do not have human understanding.
3 I have not learned wisdom,
nor have I attained to the knowledge of the Holy One.
Agur is an unknown wise man. first introduced in 10-33. His name does not occur anywhere else in the Bible. An oracle is a prophecy unusual in prophetic literature.
This section is a good summery of proverbs.
He starts with an encouragement to head wisdom. he also warns aganist ignorance that his described as folly in the proverbs
The HOLY ONE
Isia 1:4 do not turn your back on this mighty lord of Heaven
God Makes Makes Life Worth Living
God Makes Makes Life Worth Living
4 Who has gone up to heaven and come down?
Whose hands have gathered up the wind?
Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and what is the name of his son?
Surely you know!
5 “Every word of God is flawless;
he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
6 Do not add to his words,
or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
He has gathered up the wind. No person can even 100% predict the weather let alone control it.Jesus stilled the storm with a word. Matt 14
Has wrapped water in a garment, cronulla 5 mtr waves. drown us he wears it. Jesus walked on the water. Matt 14
Established the ends of the earth. we still have not explored all the ocean and he made it. Jesus was offered the whole world and dismissed it in preference of God. matt 4
Do not add to God’s wisdom. Jesus prefered to live by gods word rather than bread. in matt 4
Wisdom and Folly
Wisdom and Folly
He asks God to keep him from falsehood Folly and to live in wisdom
7 “Two things I ask of you, Lord;
do not refuse me before I die:
8 Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.
9 Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God.
10 “Do not slander a servant to their master,
or they will curse you, and you will pay for it.
He asks to be kept from folly
13 Keep your servant also from willful sins;
may they not rule over me.
Then I will be blameless,
innocent of great transgression.
He asks God for moderation no too needy orsatisfied
11 Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
only daily bread in v 8 enough to live is a good definition.
True Wisdom
True Wisdom
9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness,
True wisdom is belief and repentance
Creation, Fall, Regeneration, renewal, restoration
Living for an eternal prize

17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.
19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
Follow the path of wisdom
Think of the treasure recieved by Tom and James yesterday.
Tom highest honour, but he has only a few steps left then it will mean nothing to him.
James has finished his walk and he has recieved treasure in heaven
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
