Introduction
New Theme: Love Conquers Hate
State of our world today
Where is the Love!
What is Love

Not Mere Sentimentalism

Ideal and feeling that anything confrontational is wrong – 11th commandment Thou Shalt Be Nice.
Nothing confrontational. So when you hear anything confrontational the sermon dies the death of a thousand qualifications. (Especially in younger generation)
Just say what the book says.
People are more offended that the sin was confronted than that it offends God.

Not Anti-intellectualism

Your faith is all about your experience and what you feel and what you know on the inside
We do not always gauge the rightness and wrongness of things by the facts, but instead gauge the rightness and wrongness of things based on our feelings when they are presented

Not an Overwhelming force we cannot control

Follow your heart
Cupid
“This thing is bigger that both us”
“We do not choose who with fall in love with”
“The heart wants what it wants”
Jeremiah 17:9 ESV
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
Hebrews 3:10 ESV
Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’

Biblical love is an act of the will, accompanied by emotion, that leads to action on behalf of its object

Matthew 7:21 ESV
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
1. Act of the Will - Love is first and foremost a choice
2. Accompanied by emotion – not lead by but accompanied by
3. Christ is our model for love
Ephesians 5:25 ESV
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
a. Jesus does not love the church because she’s fine
b. Jesus does not love the church because she makes him happy
c. Jesus loves the church, b/c he loves the church. It’s his bride. He has a covenant with her
i. Not base on emotion or a feeling that must be sustained over the years
ii. Not an overwhelming force that struck him one day that made him decide he was going to sacrifice his life to save her.
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 5:8 ESV
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Luke 10:27 ESV
And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”

You Cannot Define Love Apart From God

1 John 4:7–9 ESV
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
