Introduction

Greetings…
v
Revelation 19:9 ESV
9 And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”

Betrothed

Jewish Custom.

The Jewish betrothal is most similar to our modern term “engagement” however there are some stark differences.
First, most families started the betrothal while there children were at a very young age. Remember at this time arranged marriages were the norm.
This allowed the boys parents to pay whatever dowry was agreed upon.
Genesis 34:12 ESV
12 Ask me for as great a bride-price and gift as you will, and I will give whatever you say to me. Only give me the young woman to be my wife.”
Secondly, the betrothal, though the first step, still committed the two to be married as married.
Notice that they were even considered husband and wife.
Deuteronomy 22:23–24 ESV
23 “If there is a betrothed virgin, and a man meets her in the city and lies with her, 24 then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbor’s wife. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.
Therefore, the betrothal was the first step in the marriage process.
The Bible describes these very customs but in the spiritual sense in the…

Christian Betrothal.

This betrothal between Christ and his creation was made long ago.
Genesis 3:15 ESV
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
This betrothal was not only made a long time ago but the “dowry” was very steep.
Acts 20:28 ESV
28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.
1 Corinthians 6:20 ESV
20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

Summary

The God whom you and I are here to serve this morning, from the very beginning, desired to have the closet relationship anyone can have with another which is marriage.
God took the first step in betrothing us by paying the dowry.
That brings us to the second step, betrothal “part 2” if you will the…

Interval Marital Stage

Jewish Custom.

As I just said this is the “second part” of the betrothal, typically titled “Interval Stage,” concerning marriages amongst God’s faithful during the N.T. era.
A short time before the “wedding day” the couple prepared for their new lives by getting their home ready and the bride prepared a special wedding garment for her groom that symbolized her committeemen to her husband.
This was a time of commitment to each other and was characterized by promise, purity, and preparation.
We see this with Joseph and Mary though, we find Joseph getting a surprise.
Matthew 1:18–19 ESV
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.
As our Creator’s creation, betrothed to God, I’m thankful for the…

Christian Interval Stage.

Christ having paid the dowry with his blood allowed you and I to opportunity to enter the “interval marital stage” with our groom.
We have not yet become wed and consummated the marriage with our God.
John 14:3 ESV
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
However, this doesn’t mean we aren’t married as we pointed out before.
Genesis 29:21 ESV
21 Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife that I may go in to her, for my time is completed.”
This “interval marital stage” we are in right now is a time in our marriage of great promise, purity, and preparation.
During this interval time we are to meditate with excitement and anticipation for the promised wedding feast (Rev 19:9).
Psalm 119:148 ESV
148 My eyes are awake before the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promise.
During this interval time we are to stay pure as a betrothed virgin.
1 John 3:3 ESV
3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
2 Corinthians 11:2 ESV
2 For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.
During this interval time we are to be continually preparing ourselves for the wedding day.
1 Peter 1:13 ESV
13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Summary

The God whom you and I are here to serve this morning, has not only betrothed us to himself but is patiently waiting for us to keep our mind on the goal the wedding feast.
Which bring us to the last step in the marriage custom which is the…

Consummation Marital Stage

Jewish Custom.

This was the “wedding day.”
This day the bride would get ready with her family and friends as would the groom.
The groom, dressed in his best attire, would head to his betrothed bride with his friends singing and typically bearing torches.
Once at the brides, father’s home, he would receive his bride and take her back to his home with everyone accompanying them singing and rejoicing.
The groom takes his bride in to the house to consummated the marriage making the grooms house now the two’s home.
They then celebrate a minimum of a week with family and friends and sometimes two weeks.
Pertaining to our spiritual marriage to God also read in scripture concerning the…

Christian Consummation Stage.

The brides groom, Christ Jesus, will come in all his glory with his angels to get his bride.
Matthew 25:31 ESV
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.
All those who had faith in the promise, remained pure, and prepared for this day shall be brought to their groom.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 ESV
17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
The celebration that goes on when we are in heaven with our God won’t be for a week or even two weeks but for eternity.
Matthew 25:46 ESV
46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Conclusion

Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,

1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
