Do You See - Refocus

Jesus paints pictures with words through parables that are life changing.
The Lost sheep
The Pharisee and Tax collector praying in the temple
The persistent widow
Today I feel that this parable can be applied to everyone.
Luke 11 & 12
Luke 11:53 ESV
As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things,
In chapter 11 there is a signal word that we must ask ourself. Where is there?
Luke 12:1 ESV
In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Do you see what I see, you have Scribes, Pharisees and so many thousands.
Jesus begins to is teaching about being prepared for his return
Luke 12:8–9 ESV
“And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.
He teaches about laying up treasures in haven. (Rich Fool)
Not being anxious…
Luke 12:35–36 ESV
“Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks.
Peter wanted to make sure… Is this for us or them?
Luke 12:41 ESV
Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?”
Jesus teaches that he comes to cause division…
Luke 12:54 ESV
He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens.
Do you see what I see…
I see the disciples, Scribes, Pharisees and a Large crowd
2 major events happened during the time of Jesus
Luke 13:1 ESV
There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
They may have broken some important Roman law [NIVS].
They probably were involved in some activities against the Romans.
The incident happened during their sacrifices.
The comment perhaps intends to highlight the injustice of governing authorities despite efforts to behave correctly—and so to present an objection to Jesus’ instructions.
Jesus tells them unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
Luke 13:4 ESV
Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem?
Siloam (Si - low - um)
Siloam was the name of a pool or reservoir off the city of Jerusalem near the junction of the south and east walls of Jerusalem.
We don’t know why but the tower apparently collapsed.
But Jesus tells them the same thing. Unless you repent....
Do you see what I see.... Jesus was basically saying it doesn’t matter how you go… Just repent
Anchor Text
Luke 13:6 ESV
And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.
Luke 13:7 ESV
And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’
Do you see what I see…
Remember who Jesus is talking to: The disciples / Scribes / Pharisees / A major crowd (Jews)
The vinedresser - “I’ve been seeking fruit for three years now” - I find none
“Cut it down.” - “Why should it use up the ground?”
Luke 13:8–9 ESV
And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’ ”
Let’s Identify the characters…
A man - God
Fig Tree - Nation of Isreal
Vinedresser - Jesus
“For three years now I have come seeking fruit on this tree” - Connected to Jesus earthly ministry (Even John the baptist)
Remember this parable is connected to repentance…
Cutting down the tree stands for judgment [BECNT].
The parable means that unless the repentance called for in 13:3–5 happens, it will be too late [TH].
God is patient, but this will not last forever and the opportunity to be saved will be withdrawn.
Remember salvation was for the Jews first..
Luke 13:8–9 ESV
And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’ ”
If you rejected it, and many did! God moved to the gentiles.....
How does it apply to me!
Do you see what I see…
Luke 13:7–9 ESV
And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’ And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’ ”
Its a picture of a person who is not spiritually productive.. .
Have you ever felt like your taking up space…
Floating without direction
Three years of the same thing!!!
“Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around and put on manure.”
Dig: to turn up, loosen, or remove earth or other material, most often of what is located below one’s feet.
Manure: Fertilizer
I’m thankful!!!!
Jesus knows how to turn up somethings in my life.
He knows how to use his word like fertilizer (seed) to help me grow…
He wants me to bear fruit…
