Introduction

Acts 2:42–47 ESV

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

One of the things we see the first church doing was worship.

Worship is an essential of church. We have a need and responsibility for corporate worship .

What is Worship

As followers of Jesus, we are called to live a life of worship. Paul reminded the Roman believers of this in

Romans 12:1 ESV

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

It begins in the heart and flows from our innermost being.

Jesus warned us to worship sincerely, not with vain lip service only. Mt 15:8-9

Matthew 15:8–9 ESV

“ ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”

Lip service worship

going through the motions

Acting like they are worshipping

Yet it is only on their lips, not from their heart.

Worship is knowing God’s worth and expressing it out of our innermost being.

Jesus pointed us to the right attitude in Jn 4:23-24

John 4:23–24 ESV

But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Truth and Spirit unite in true worship

Worship is based on God’s worth.

God is worthy

His worth is infinite

Romans 11:33-36

Romans 11:33–36 ESV

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

God deserves all the glory. When we worship, we express that to Him and about Him. We do that through songs, prayers, and the Scripture. All we do should point to the glory of God.

Hebrews 13:15–16 ESV

Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
