Evangelism and discipleship are foundational and essential elements of Christian mission. The mission of the Church. The mission of Acts 2 Community Church.
Evangelism means announcing the good news of Christ’ death, burial, resurrection, and ascension. Discipleship is the task of training believers to become mature followers of Christ, growing in their knowledge of, love for, and obedience to the Lord.
Evangelism is proclamation.
In the ancient world, kings dispatched heralds to announce the good news of their victories in battle. The New Testament writers also understood evangelism as announcing God’s victory over sin and death through the death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Christ
The little Girl story
This is mission work.
John 20:21 NASB95
21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
A)Missionaries- How many missionaries . We all should have raised our hands. Let me explain.
Missionaries are sent ones. What do you think of when you think of a missionary.
someone who leaves the country to go to another country
takes on new culture norms
to learn another language
someone that eats weird things
who leaves the comforts of America to suffer
professional Christians paid by the church or an organization to take the Gospel to faraway places.
All these are true and I’m not trying to take away from that.
B) The thing is most of us do not think of ourselves as missionaries. There is a reason we don’t:
We’ve been taught to.
Our church culture said missionaries are somewhere out there.
The church here in America are merely “lay people” that can evangelize, but that is somehow different than mission.
C) This has caused our God given identity as missionaries to be stifled.
We don’t know we are missionaries.
on the flip side a false identity is created and put on church leadership. Unobtainable goals and expectations are set for them, and the lion’s share of the work of the church rest on their shoulders.
D) Ministers- How many full time minsters do we have here?
2 Corinthians 5:18 NKJV
18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation,
2 Corinthians 3:6 ESV
6 who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
John 20:21 NASB95
21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
Whatever God has asked you to do, here is 3 things to remember:
(1) Your authority comes from God, and
A) He has sent us to Saginaw thus has given us authority to take this city for Him
B) we are not in authority unless we are under authority of His word.
(2) Jesus has demonstrated by words and actions how to accomplish the job he has given you. As the Father sent his Son, Jesus sends his followers … and you.
(3)Your response is to determine from day to day those to whom the Father has sent you.
The news that Jesus was alive began to spread among His followers, at first with hesitation, but then with enthusiasm. Even His disciples did not believe the first reports, and Thomas demanded proof. But wherever people were confronted with the reality of His resurrection, their lives were transformed.
The same spirit that rested upon Jesus now rest upon us as the church to do the work of the Son in the earth. How that would have changed there life.
