Augustine of Hippo: Selected Writings 12

In misery I exclaimed: “How long, how long shall I continue to say: ‘tomorrow and tomorrow’? Why not now? Why not this very hour put an end to my uncleanness?”

This I said, weeping, in the most bitter contrition of my heart. And suddenly I heard a voice from a neighboring house in a singing tune saying and often repeating, in the voice of a boy or girl: “Take and read, take and read.” Immediately I stopped weeping, and I began to think intently as to whether the singing of words like these was part of any children’s game, and I could not remember ever hearing anything like it before. I checked the force of my tears and rose to my feet, interpreting it as nothing other than a divine command to open the book and read the first passage to be found. For I had heard of Anthony that he happened to enter when the Gospel was being read, and as though the words were spoken directly to himself he accepted the admonition: “Go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven, and come, follow me” (Mt 19:21), and by such an oracle he had been immediately converted to you.

So I eagerly returned to that place where Alypius was sitting, for there I had left the book of the Apostle when I stood up. I snatched the book, opened and read in silence the passage which first met my eye: “Not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying: but put you on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh in con-cu-pis-cence” (Rom 13:13). I did not want to read further, there was no need to. For as soon as I reached the end of this sentence, it was as though my heart was filled with a light of confidence and all the shadows of my doubts were swept away.

It is time to wake up and live with the eager anticpation of Jesus’ return, then in turn you will find yourself not living in a spiritual fictional reality but rather in an awaken spiritual reality!!!
