10. Application of Bible Events

A. Creation (Gen. 1:1-2:3)

Genesis 1:1 NKJV
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

1. This is perhaps the most profound statement ever uttered. Out of this great statement unfolds everything else that is contained in the word of God.

A. It is from the foundation of the world that God began the redemption of man.

Revelation 13:8 NKJV
8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
1. This began to be demonstrated in Genesis 3:15.
Genesis 3:15 NKJV
15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”

B. It is from the beginning that marriage was instituted.

Matthew 19:3–8 NKJV
3 The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” 4 And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” 7 They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?” 8 He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.
1. Matthew 19:5-6 was first stated in Genesis 2:24.
Genesis 2:24 NKJV
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

2. It is because God is the potter or creator that He has the right to tell the clay what to become or how to live.

Isaiah 29:16 NKJV
16 Surely you have things turned around! Shall the potter be esteemed as the clay; For shall the thing made say of him who made it, “He did not make me”? Or shall the thing formed say of him who formed it, “He has no understanding”?

A. We often think of God as the creator as in Genesis 1:1 and the six days of creation but it is deeper than that.

Colossians 1:16 NKJV
16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
1. He create everything
A. Marriage
B. Redemption
C. Thrones
D. Dominions
E. Principalities or Powers

B. Often we think of the Father in Genesis 1:1 but to do we tie Jesus to this phrase as being the creator of all things.

John 1:1–3 NKJV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
Hebrews 1:1–4 NKJV
1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
1. All three parts of the Godhead are present at the creation.
Genesis 1:26 NKJV
26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
2. The Hebrew word used for God throughout Genesis 1 is Elohim which is plural.
A. The Father gave the order.
B. The Son fulfilled the order.
C. The Spirit was the action behind the order.

3. The fact that the world exist as it does with all of it complexities proves the existence of God as the creator.

Romans 1:20 NKJV
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,

A. Only the fool says there is no God.

Psalm 14:1 NKJV
1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, They have done abominable works, There is none who does good.
1. The reason for this is that it is not in man to direct his own steps.
Jeremiah 10:23 NKJV
23 O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.
A. The world without God is a mess.
2. The reason for the world being a mess without God is our heart is deceitful.
Jeremiah 17:9 NKJV
9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?

B. The Garden of Eden (Gen. 2:4-25).

1. God created the Garden of Eden to be perfect.

Genesis 2:4–9 NKJV
4 This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, 5 before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; 6 but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground. 7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. 8 The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. 9 And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

A. God did not create sin.

James 1:12–13 NKJV
12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.
1. God did not cause Adam and Eve to sin by placing the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden.
A. Sin was mankind’s choice.
James 1:14–15 NKJV
14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
2. In order for man to have free will there had to be a choice between right and wrong.
1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV
13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
3. If there was no choice to sin then there is also no free will.
A. Free will is what allows us to love God.
John 14:15 NKJV
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.
B. Free will is what gives us the ability to choose Him.
Joshua 24:15 NKJV
15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

2. The problem of pain and suffering is also answered in placement of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden as well.

A. Some say that an all good God could not allow pain and suffering of His children to take place.

B. The problem is that suffering is a choice made by someone.

1. Mankind chose to bring sin into the world.
2. The Garden and mankind were created perfect.
3. When man sinned they chose the consequences of sin.
Romans 6:23 NKJV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
4. Sometimes those consequences affect other people other than the one that sinned.
Exodus 34:6–7 NKJV
6 And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, 7 keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”
5. In order to remove all pain and suffering free will would have to be removed.
6. Thus the out come of all pain and suffering being removed would be mindless robots.

C. Pain and suffering is a derivative of man’s free will.

1. God gave man free will with the intent that man would choose to serve Him.
2. The fact that we choose to sin and bring pain and suffering into the world is not God’s fault.

D. God would then use man’s pain and suffering for good.

James 1:2–3 NKJV
2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.
1. Not all pain and suffering is bad.
A. Pain can bring about one seeking a doctors treatment.
B. A burn can let you know to remove your hand from the fire.
C. The pain of sin can let you know you need to repent.
1 Timothy 4:1–2 NKJV
1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,
