What do we do when nothing seems certain?

When things seem to be constant changing, what and where do we turn?

We are broken.

As a world. As a nation. As a state. As a community. As a church. And as individuals.

Is there any hope?

This is the natural question which comes to my heart and mind.

Where is the hope?

This may be the better question because there is hope. Regardless of how broken you are there is always hope. Do we see this? Maybe to provide myself some conviction, Am I a carrier of hope? How can I be hope? Is another question to maybe ask each week.

God is the only certain refuge.

Because God is a refuge indicates life will not be easy. We will be put into hard situations and those which may seem to overtake us. In a world where everything is changing, sometimes it seems daily.

God is ultimately in control.

We call it His sovereignty. I know I have mentioned this many times during these past few months. But, if we do not understand this truth: God is sovereign and is still in control; then we can despair, become discouraged, want to give up and ultimately shrink back into a state of hopelessness.

In Christ, we have a future.

Look at this in Psalm 37. Though in this world we will have trouble, words of Jesus, our future is not only secure but it is a beautiful picture. Jesus came to take up our brokenness and heal it.

Seek true justice.

This isn’t a justice which we will fully get right. It starts by first seeking Christ. Then it is about living this out in many ways throughout our world and communities.

Be careful of your words.

Speech is powerful. Once uttered it cannot be taken back.

Faithfully search for Christ’s peace.

His peace is available. This is the promise of John 14-16. Without the peace of Christ we cannot have hope, cannot seek justice, and will not utter words of wisdom.

We must have humility.

Humility is a grateful and spontaneous awareness that life is a gift, and it is manifested as an ungrudging and unhypocritical acknowledgment of absolute dependence upon God.

In the early part of the Psalm, verse 11, we read “But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.” We see these theme continue on and one throughout this Psalm. Meekness and humility are not as distinct as we would like to believe according to Scripture. In fact, some argue they are the same concept.

Look up not around.

We must first start by looking up to the only one in control. The only one who is the firm foundation which does not change.

Look around not in.

In Psalm 37 we see how this appears as we are called to be justice maker, peace makers, and generously give to others. Yet, Paul said it this way:
Philippians 2:1–4 NIV
Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Rest in God’s security.

The world doesn’t depend on us. We cannot let God down because we are not holding him up. In God’s security we will find the healing we need for our brokenness. God will not fail. He cannot fail. We will but he will be there to put us on firm footing.
