You cannot see, touch, or feel the Spirit. How do we KNOW that we have received the Holy Spirit? Here are three observations from Scripture that tell us that all believers in Jesus have received the Holy Spirit.

The Gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38) – Part 2 Acts 2:38 “…and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” 1. The Term Used for This Word “Gift” (δωρεά) a. Used only of spiritual gifts given freely by God to believers b. Used only 11x in the New Testament • • • • Gift of salvation through Jesus (2x – Rom 5:15; 2 Cor 9:15) Gift of righteousness (1x – Rom 5:17) Gift of grace (2x – Eph 3:7, Paul; 4:7, believers) Gift of the Holy Spirit (6x) Acts 10:45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. Acts 11:17 "If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?" 2. The Timing of the Gift of the Holy Spirit a. It happened to the 120 at Pentecost (Acts 2:33; 5:32) b. It happened to the Samaritan believers (Acts 8:15-17) c. It happened when Gentiles believed (Acts 10:44-48; 11:1-18; 15:7-9) Acts 15:7-9 And when there had been much dispute, Peter rose up and said to them: "Men and brethren, you know that a good while ago God chose among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8 "So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us, 9 "and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.” d. It happened to John’s disciples (Acts 19:1-6) 3. Why Did Some Believers Have to Wait to Receive the Holy Spirit? a. Each instance is a purposeful validation of a special group. b. There are no more delays. God had made the needed points. c. All Scripture after these instances suggests the Holy Spirit is given immediately when one believes (as Acts 2:38 suggests). d. The Epistles teach that each church-aged believer has the Spirit. 4. Why Is the Gift of the Holy Spirit So Special? a. This Gift had ______________ been given broadly or permanently. b. This Gift will be given to all Jews & Gentiles in the _____________. c. This Gift is unique to all church-age believers: ______________! 5. How Do We _______________ We Have the Holy Spirit? Northridge Baptist Church – Pastor Kevin Subra – July 26, 2020 a. The Spirit indwelling us is tied to our ______________________. Rom 8:9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. 1 Cor 3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 1 Cor 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 2 Tim 1:14 That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. b. The Spirit is given to a person when one ____________________. Acts 2:38 “Repent…and you shall receive the gift…” Gal 3:2 This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? (cf. 3:5) Gal 3:13-14 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree "), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Gal 4:6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!" Eph 1:13-14 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. c. The Spirit always “has been given” (________ tense) to believers Rom 5:5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 2 Cor 1:21-22 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22 who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. 2 Cor 5:5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. 1 Thes 4:8 Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit. 1 John 4:13 By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.
