Intro:
Last week, we got through 2 chapters.. Woop
We talked all about the bowl judgments, God going to bring His judgment to completion.
V.1-2
This angel is showing John, Babylon.
Sits on many waters
She is over many nations..
So, it’s most likely talking about a unification of false religions.. So, a melting pot of many religions.
At this time, we will be gone… There will be people all joining this false religion.
V.3-6
Scarlet Beast
So, this harlot is riding the same beast that came out of the sea..
The Anti Christ and his dictatorship.
She is supported by the antichrist and she has a dominant role, so it seems.
The woman..
purple and gold are signs of luxury.
Scarlet is a symbol of government,
Forehead a name..
back in the day, Roman prostitutes wore a headband with their name written on it.
“These two Women, thus related, and set over one against the other as opposites and rivals, must necessarily be interpreted in the same way. As Antichrist corresponds to Christ as a rival and antagonist of Christ, so Great Babylon corresponds to the Woman that bears the Man-child, as her rival and antagonist.” (Seiss)
Mystery, Babylon the Great
It’s not a literal Babylon, but a spiritual one.
Babylon is the source of all idolatry and spiritual adultery.
This woman brings persecution and she loves it.
John was amazed, probably because this wasn’t the world persecuting, but false religion was.
V. 7-8
Here, we see the beast carrying the woman...
Most likely, the Antichrist is now using her to serve his own agenda.
Once was, now is not,
This probably means the evil may seemed to have disappeared, but only seemed like it..
Evil will return.
V. 9-10
7 heads are 7 Mountains.
People say that this is a reference to Rome, because Rome is known for the city on seven hills.
It could be wrong, it’s probably more 7 kings.
7 Kings could be the 7 empires : Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, and a future empire.
V.11-13
The antichrist is pretty much the 8th king.
he will be destroyed.
Some believe that the Beast has 2 different personalities
1- when he kills the 2 witnesses.
2- after he is resurrected after the fatal wound
The 10 horns are from Daniel 7:7,20,24’
10 kings who will rule alongside the beast during the 42 months.
This period is 1 hour, another name of tribulation is called “The hour of testing” 3:10
V.14-18
The battle takes place at the second coming of Jesus.
SO, it seems like the armies who are following Jesus are the believers since we are called: Called, Chosen, and Faithful.
The Kings who were friends with the harlot, now will turn on her and destroy her.
This happens because it is all according to God’s purpose.
The Woman’s identity is now revealed… She is the great city.
Johns day, it was probably Rome.
Now, it is probably a community.
Chapter 18
Chapter 18
V.1
This angel had great authority.
This angel may have been important, since it had great authority and it was illuminated in splendor.
V.2-3
Angel announces that Babylon has fallen.
Babylon is just a home for demons, unclean spirits and all that..
Why did it fall?
Because all the nations drunk the wine of her false garbage
She brought others into her sin
V.4-8
So, we sees that even some of God’s people are stuck in the Babylon system.
The warning is focused on the saints...
These people of God are in a place where they shouldn’t be.
The call is for them to leave
Depart! Depart! Go out from there,
Touch no unclean thing;
Go out from the midst of her,
Be clean,
You who bear the vessels of the Lord.
“Move from the midst of Babylon,
Go out of the land of the Chaldeans;
And be like the rams before the flocks.
“My people, go out of the midst of her!
And let everyone deliver himself from the fierce anger of the Lord.
Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.
God will remember their sins, and they’ll be punished for it. God does not remember the sins of believers who are repentant.
For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
God is going to pay back Babylon what she deserves.
He’s going to pay her back double
V. 9-10
Could nuclear warfare, which is why the kings must stand at a distance.
V. 11-17
They sold bodies..
Human trafficking, prostitution, and porn...
Babylon will be tormented for eternity.
V.17-20
Not much needs to be said...
V.21-24
In poetic language, John describes how it’s all going to come to an end.. Babylon will be no more.
God takes the persecution on his people as a personal offense.
