We have received a gift What does Seal mean and how do it function? The closest that we have to this perhaps today is branding on cattle. You put on a seal, as it were. You brand the cattle. What that indicates is ownership and, therefore, protection. That cow is mine. It’s sealed. That is, it’s branded. It belongs to me and I will protect it. There is a sense thus in which we Christians are sealed. We are owned. We belong to God.1 1 D. A. Carson, “Marked with a Seal,” in D. A. Carson Sermon Library (Bellingham, WA: Faithlife, 2016), Eph 1:3–14.
Ephesians 1:13–14 ESVIn him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

John 16:7 ESVNevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
It is to our advantage? How?
Acts 2:38–39 ESVAnd Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
What is Holy Spirit?
Loves He brings conviction not condemnation Romans 8:16-17
Romans 8:16–17 ESVThe Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Holy Spirit reveals that we are lovedThere are no classes or races. We are all children of God. The blessing is for the Gentiles too! Gen 12:1-2
Genesis 12:1–2 ESVNow the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.
The Pillar New Testament Commentary: The Letter to the Ephesians 5. Praise for the Assurance of the Believers’ Heritage, 1:11–14When the Gentiles believed the gospel, they were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise
By giving Gentile believers the Spirit, God ‘seals’ or stamps them as his own now, and he will be protect them through the trials and testings of this life (cf. 6:10–18) until he takes final possession of them (cf. v. 14) on ‘the day of redemption’ (4:30).129 1 129 129 Cf. Faithlife Study Bible Chapter 1you Refers to the Gentiles (see note on Eph 1:11). Paul stresses that the same inheritance (v. 14) God gave to Jews is also made available to non-Jews according to God’s revealed mystery (vv. 9; 3:3–9).
Faithlife Study Bible Chapter 1you were sealed In the ancient world, a seal indicated ownership and protection (compare Dan 6:17 and note; 2 Cor 1:22). The notion of sealing in this context is related to the Day of Judgment: Sealed believers will be kept for their ultimate inheritance—redemption at the end of the age (Eph 1:14)—by the gift of the promised Spirit (Ezek 36:26–27; Joel 2:28–30), which is given to Jews and Gentiles alike.
2. Strengths Us
Ephesians 3:14–19 ESVFor this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
